Strongly recommend Gosick if want to watch something similar -smart female lead -both series involve the heroines solve small cases that seem unrelated to each other, but all end up giving clues to a bigger case (I think this is the biggest similarity, and the thing that makes both series really really interesting) -both have historical settings, one oriental, the other western -both heroines have complicated background/backstory -both heroines are quirky to the eyes of others in the anime, one is obsessed with medicine and the other with cases -bonus: in Japanese, both heroines are voiced by the same voice actress

This will be helpful as I don't really leave recommendations as I am just a casual anime fan. But both anime is striking with similar vibes but different settings. I was really curious as both protagonist displays same behaviour. Please check on pointers below. -Both Female protagonist has the same seiyuu hence the reason it has the same vibe when watching. -Both has historical setting; only difference is—Gosick is Western/European and Kusuriya is Eastern/Oriental setting. -Both Female MC loves mystery and indeed smart; their difference is—Victorique loves mystery that much and would love to solve any case/mystery there is as she is too bored. Both are a historical (and somewhat political) mystery series with generally a serious vibe, but also contain lighthearted moments. While Gosick takes place in a little country bordering France, between WWI and WWII, Apothecary diaries takes place in imperial China. Gosick is character-wise less versatile than the Apothecary diaries, it does have a lot of charm, and focuses more on individual mysteries in its first part. Second part of the anime is more story and lore focused, and leads to a climactic conclusion.
