Even though Mononoke takes place in a classical, japanese setting, the two stories have a lot in common. First of all, they are both horror tales, but neither relies on actually scaring the viewer. You are afraid because of the atmosphere, the haunting music, the weird art style, the unknown, shady parts of the world.
In both cases, we know little of the protagonist, beside the fact that he has a unique style, strong connection to the hunted creatures (vampires, demons - it is said that D is a half-vampire, and it is hinted that Medicine Seller might be a half-kitsune.), and a strange, hard-to-follow character

Both protagonists are stoic, vagabond, attractive, and a little overpowered. D and the Medicine Seller both travel the world, solving different situations in a world plagued with monsters and demons. If you also appreciate unique, beautiful art style and animation, both Mononoke and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust have just that.
