Both films are directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri and are animated by Madhouse. They both have a similar dark and gritty atmosphere. As well as similar art, animation, and a similar vibe. Both films have the main protagonist battling against various nightmarish creatures. They are both action-packed anime with blood and gore. Differences between the two are that Wicked City is way more explicit than Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. If you like one, you should enjoy the other.

Similar gritty atmospheres and dark fantasy settings in dealing with humanoid monsters (vampires and demons respectively). These anime feature action-packed moments of violence and creepy imagery. However, 'Wicked City' is more sexually explicit and graphic. Interestingly, the rising tensions from the possible coexistence of humans and monsters is brought up in interesting ways; through the existence of D as a half-vampire hunter who feels like an outsider in both sides of his heritage, and in Maki and Takie cooperating for peace between their respective species.
