Both shows are about tons of magical spells and in a fantasy, medieval setting. Oh and there's the adventure aspect in both shows as well.
Magi is one of the more popular recent anime, and I am betting many active anime watchers should've already caught up with it. As for Slayers, due to its age, many younger viewers like me might've missed it back then.
