Both shows have partners who work together win their duels/matches. One series is based on a popular card game that is known worldwide. The other is based on the Gundam franchise which uses familiar Gundam models from past Gundam series. Yugioh is dark while Gundam Build Fighters is light-hearted. Both series catered to children.

If you like YuGiOh for it's story, games, and battles - and how those are paced, then Gundam Build Fighters 2013 is where to look. To me it's the true spiritual successor to Duel Monsters's format.
However, if instead you like YuGiOh for it's style and presentation, then I highly recommend checking out Tekken 1998. You'll recognise and come to understand a huge amount of director Kunihisa Sugishima's screen language. It was a delightful thing to watch, like a museum of visual ideas I've seen in YuGiOh.
