Sonny Boy is, in my opinion, very obviously inspired by Satoshi Kon's work, both in content and style. The first episode alone emulates Kon's psychological filmmaking style and the animation closely resembles artistic choices used in Perfect Blue and Paprika.

Sonny Boy is clearly inspired by Satoshi's Magnum Opus, Perfect Blue. The direction in SB closely resembles the style of PB in style and in content. PB and SB are works about finding and truly accepting yourself both with heavy psychological aspects. I found this anime series to be something that tried to be some kind of tribute to the memory of Satoshi, but in the end, it still could find its own identity. Nonetheless, it's really interesting to find that the original character design of PB and SB are done by the same person which explains why the artistic identity of both works are
