I watched both these anime without looking anything up about them beforehand, and the great thing is...both anime turned out to be hilarious.
Besides the fact that they are great comedy, they are both working-life anime where the characters design creatures, in Kaijin Kaihatsu they design monsters while in Tenchi Souzou they design animals (and some monsters as well). The anime show the hardships of having a job very well, and the characters often experience failure while doing their job.
Tenchi Souzou is more educational and has a small cast without cute girls, Kaijin Kaihatsu has plenty.
Both have woke themes (character in wrong gendered body)
