Basicly follows the same background story, but it much more developed. Since Studio Ponoc was founded by Studio Ghibli's former workers, the animation follows the same philosophy, also the same source of inspiration from many stories written for children by british authors about sorcery and other supernatural creatures. The only downside is that like all other movies from Ghibli, this one ends too.
