Both involve activities (mahjong, baking bread and pastries) that a lot of people might consider mundane. Both manage to make the activities exciting through exaggerated movements, bombastic reactions, and hints of the supernatural. Competitors in the tournaments are actually fleshed-out characters that can be sympathetic and are not just rivals of the week.
Saki can be a lot harder to follow if you aren't already familiar with the rules of Japanese mahjong, even with translator's notes. Yakitate!! Japan seems to be easier to understand. And, of course, Yakitate!! has a greater focus on humor and punnery.
