The setting of a post-apocalyptic world is a commonality between these two shows that otherwise feel very dissimilar, with "High School of the Dead" being set in a modern Japan whilst "A Wind Named Amnesia" being set in a more futuristic United States.
The male protagonists from both anime are kindhearted and straightforward action heroes, especially when they jump into danger in order to save people in need of help.
