Before I start, I'll say that you should watch Gakkou Gurashi ***without any prior knowledge***.
Don't even click the "read more" button below on this recommendation. (There aren't really any spoilers, but yeah).
The simple explanation about both animes is that they're both very happy (yet not entirely) shows with cutesy loli animation, lots of feels, and a bit (or a lot) of twist.
If you like animes that have lots of feels, mix in very happy moments, and mix in very traumatic moments, both are good watches.

Both anime may look like slice-of-life school comedies, particularly the OP and some funny moments, but it is really dramatic and has intense moments
Both have supernatural elements, with Kotoura having espers and GG! having zombies
The difference is that while GG! focuses more on zombie survival, Kotoura focuses a bit more on romance
