Superficially,Juuni Kokuki and Shiki are not so similar. Juuni Kokuki is a fantasy story about 12 asian-like kingdoms and Shiki is a horror story in a small village. However, Those two stories were originally written by Fuyumi Ono and both stories share the same concept about life and humanity. If you are in the mood to be disappointed with ugly part of human beings but also want to look for the beauty in this ugliness, Juuni Kokuki is definitely the first choice.

while the premises for these shows are not very similar, both are based on works by author fuyumi ono. Her works do have some consistent elements, most notably an emphasis on the psychological, and a view of human nature as less than good. This makes both shows fairly interesting if you like works that explore character motivations more than actions.
