The similarity lies with the characters. You're going to get a familiar feel regarding many of the characters if you've seen either one. It doesn't hurt that both series share the same character designer and some of the seiyuu have worked on both titles.

This recommendation is specifically for if you liked the teen drama parts of FranXX. It has the same kind of love quadrilateral shenanigans (although they're a little more all over the place in Ano Natsu). Many of the character relationships are the same, Tetsurou & Kanna are pretty much the same characters as Goro & Ichigo. Although both are sci-fi, FranXX features mecha action and a post apocalyptic setting, whereas Ano Natsu is a fairly straight forward romance drama with a chill summer setting.

Waiting in the Summer has parts very similar to Darling in the FRANXX, plus some of the main characters have very similar characteristics and actions. If you've watched Waiting in the Summer and liked it, there's a good chance you'll like Darling in the FRANXX, which in my opinion is much better.
