Sakugan (Anime) add
Preliminary (2/12 eps)
The disappointment of the season. I finally gave up halfway through episode 8.

The first episode was brilliant, a rollicking mashup of Turren Langen & Made in Abyss. The end of that episode was a shock, too. I was really excited by what was to come.

Sadly, what was to come was the father, and he was so stereotypical & clichéd that any attempts to give him depth or humanity seemed forced. (Time for Gabumber to reveal he loves his daughter!) Worse, the show became more and more about him – and he is the least interesting character in the show! Nothing in this show made me ...

This movie is so bad, there is a date montage in the first few minutes. There's a song in the middle that would have been more effective if sung by a sock puppet. There is every high school slice-of-life in the books. The entire plot, like almost every second-rate HS SOL anime, is driven by the writer forcing the characters in to silence rather than blurting out even a tiny bit of their honest feelings.

If this had been a standard 12-cour anime, it would have been tolerable. There would have been good places to end each week, the animation quality would have sufficed, and it ...

Preliminary (4/12 eps)
I was going to give this up after two episodes, but Gigguk raving about the fight scenes made me start over. And the fights in episode 1 are indeed spectacular. The trouble is, the fights occur less and less. Much of what was set up in episode 1 isn't held together, even though 2-4 are flashbacks (leading, I'm guessing, to episode 5).

There is clearly some weird stuff going on beyond a new form of "bad things from space that can only be defeated by human girls powered by good things from space". It's tough to come up with a decent variation on this scene (cf, ...

Mieruko-chan (Anime) add
Preliminary (4/12 eps)
The first episode was fun, discovering the premise of the show. By the middle of episode 4, it was getting a bit samey and I was hoping they'd start to head for some kind of resolution, some change in the whole plot.

Well they did, but not in the way I expected at all. Obviously, no spoilers, so I'll say this:

I'm glad I stuck with it. It wasn't that hard to do, either. There was enough variety through the first three episodes. The art is just a big different from the usual anime, and I appreciate that. The tension that builds by varying the situations works ...

Sonny Boy (Anime) add
Preliminary (8/12 eps)
In order to watch Sonny Boy and get full enjoyment, you have to let go of any need to have a linear story and the expectation that everything will get explained. From week to week, the whys & hows of this story seem to shift just as much as the characters and their situations.

Confusing? Yes. Entertaining? Hell yes.

What I enjoyed most about Sonny Boy is the visual experience. From the off-kilter unbalancing of the first episode to the 2001-esque running scene of the final episode, so many different art approaches. With most anime doing the same thing as every other anime, even if they do ...

Preliminary (4/12 eps)
The problem is in the title, so I'm not spoiling anything when I say: the dead detective was the best part of the show. The assistant was yet another cookie-cutter bland useless high school boy "hero" who, like most of them, is an utter waste of time.

My brain being what it is, I didn't realize the detective being dead was a major aspect of the show as I watched episode one. It was fun, and I liked the detective embracing being an over-the-top character. The villain was ridiculous but eventually revealed to be part of an evil organization's plot. Then at the end of episode ...

Toji no Miko (Anime) add
Mixed Feelings
I think what really spoiled this show for me was the foundation of the story (and I'll try to avoid spoilage as best as can). The lead character and her predecessor in the story both act out of so-called love and, as a result, many people die. Instead of making the hard, painful choice that would end a tremendous, destructive evil, both choose their own feelings.

And neither pays a price for it. They are both seen as heroic, even as innocent people continue to die because of their actions. If you are someone who watches an anime like this for the swordfights and the story ...

If you want to watch in chronological order, watch them in this order:

4 / 1 / 2 / 7 / 11 / 12 / 5 / 6 / 3 / 8 / 10 / 9

I just watched the whole thing today in this order; it works. (10 is the season finale; 9 is a prequel explainer.)

Because I waited until all 12 episodes were shown, I was able to watch in this order, and in one afternoon-evening. I think I got more from it that way than others who just watched week-by-week. Some parts are not great, but nothing is bad. A lot of is really ...
