As far as ratings go, I recommend everything I've rated at 6 or higher.
I definitely prefer manga and novels to anime. I tend to have much less patience with anime, even when the story is good. I've put much more care into my manga list than anime list.
As far as my tastes go... I feel I have broad genre tastes, but I have tropes I generally favor. First of all, I don't care too much about realism as long as the story is internally consistent. I like a good "Hard Work and Guts" philosophy. I enjoy good strategic fight scenes and I think straight up brawls are generally boring, even if they are more realistic. I prefer non-mainstream battles... like battles of wit or cooking. I like comedies, especially romantic comedies. I don't enjoy long bouts of "will-they-won't-they"; I much prefer watching happy couples deal with relationship problems. I love stories that give off both lighthearted and melancholy feelings, especially when they cover a long period of time in the characters' lives. I also love stories that explore how differently the characters act and think; watching clashing ideologies is especially great. I enjoy heavy and thought-provoking stories too, but only when I'm in the right mood. Above all, I like character focused stories.
Lastly, I don't think any particular genre is below another. I don't think a comedy should be penalized for not being more serious or thought-provoking. For example, as a Shonen series, Dragon Ball is a 9 or 10. As a deep drama, it's a 0. That said, I'd still rate Dragon Ball a 9. I think depending on one's mood, light series are just as important as heavy series.
I've tried to rate consistently, but of course some items are probably mislabeled.
I try to follow this rating guide:
10: I personally really enjoyed it and it really catered to my tastes.
8-9: I thought it was done very well.
7-6: I thought it was good, but it didn't strike me as special.
5-2: Maybe it just wasn't my taste, but I didn't personally enjoy it.
3-0: I thought it was done badly and think it should be avoided.
