The First Slam Dunk does something absolutely genius, it adapts the ending of its manga as a standalone film. I didn’t know that going in, nor did I know anything about the manga aside from who wrote it. But I do know the conventions of sports anime filmmaking, and the way this film subverts them is downright genius.

One such convention is to put you inside the protagonists’ heads. This fills time without requiring complex animation, and informs the viewer as to the character’s plan and mental state. It is not a technique without merit, but is often used excessively in TV productions as to break ...

Spoiler
Spoiler warning up front. I recommend watching the film before reading this review, right now it’s on Crunchyroll in North America. I don’t think reading these spoilers will make your experience any worse, but I don’t explain the plot so some sections may be confusing.

Night on the Galactic Railroad is a fantastic film. To summarize, it portrays a post-death journey about the pain of living and finding a path forward in a meaningless universe.

You can easily read LGBTQ themes into it, an imposition more defensible for this work than for other anime films commonly read in this way (like Ocean Waves). Though there is ...

Heike Monogatari is a 2021 adaptation of a 2016 translation of a 14th century epic account of the 12th century fall of the Heike clan, and it's as epic as that history suggests.

The story can be a little hard to follow, often long blocks of exposition are given about characters we haven’t met. Massive story beats come and go as if inconsequential, and multi-year time skips pass without mention. Each episode feels far longer than its runtime.

This results in a very distant perspective for the audience. This perspective is dry, and loses some emotional impact, but feels a grand, epic, tale.

I can ...

Nichijou (Anime) add
Nichijou is a goddamn masterpiece.

The density of brilliant comedic ideas is higher here than in any other show I’ve seen, there are 3-5 ideas an episode that would be series defining moments for any other show. Every clip I’ve seen on youtube for this isn't even the funniest in its episode.

Nichijou throws jokes out at such a fast clip that in the rare instance a joke doesn’t land, another one soon will, and the show never misses with its major comedic investments. The length Nichijou goes at times to deliver a single punch line is admirable, you’ll see what I mean when you get ...

Preliminary (9/11 eps)
I usually don't trust manga readers, they always find something to complain about, but they're right on this one.

Season two fails to keep you on your toes like season one, everything is incredibly predictable. Deus ex machina is repeatedly used, as of episode 8 we've had four. The pacing is all over the place, they clearly rushed the first few episodes to get to the anime original content. There's a major plot twist about half way through which was incredibly poorly revealed (and pretty obvious is you were paying attention to season one).

The show seems to think it's posing interesting moral questions, questions such ...
