Sonic X has the misfortune of simply being the most average of the Sonic TV Shows. It's not overwhelmingly bad, but it doesn't really excel at anything either. The storylines in the first two seasons aren't interesting enough to be a good adventure story like Sonic SaTaM, the comedy isn't funny enough to be as entertaining as AoSTH or Sonic Boom, and it's not even absurd enough to be so-bad-it's-good like Sonic Underground. Season 2 is a bit better, but the Sonic Adventure adaptations rush through things a bit and lose some of the impact from the game's telling. Season 3 is actually a decent

and interesting story with some great character development, but I have a hard time recommending a show strictly on the merit of it's third season since you have to slog through so much to get there. Granted it's fairly detached from the first two seasons and a bit more in-line with the game universe, but this one's a "maybe" overall. The Sonic Adventure era was the most interesting time to be into the series story-wise and it does capture a bit of that feeling of a larger living world that those games did well compared to the newer stuff, and there are a number of weird meme-worthy scenes if you watch the uncensored version on Hulu but nothing the show does eclipses how other versions of Sonic do it.

The premise of sentient guns going to gun school where they learn how to be better guns is certainly unique. The show is almost an edutainment in places rattling off various historical tidbits about the guns and the reason for their production, along with informing the characters personalities and various gags. If you stop to google every now and then you WILL learn something about gun history and I always like a bit of the old tangential learning.
As far as how well the show actually *uses* that premise, it's a mixed bag. There are really only three big shootouts in the series, and each of
...
them is a highlight, but I expected a show about sentient guns to have a bit more action. Strip away the gun premise and it's kind of a basic slice-of-life schoolgirl series where someone whips out an assault rifle every now and then.
The comedy is also mixed, some of the scenes and gags are very funny, but the show has a weird horny streak that usually comes out of left field and doesn't fit the otherwise generally wholesome tone, and this is made worse by the fact the characters are supposed to be middle schoolers. Other gags work well though, from the bizarre school festivities to the various historical in-jokes. I certainly did grow to like the various characters as things went on and you do get a feel for how their various quirks relate to the real life gun they're based on
Artistically, the show doesn't look bad, but it also doesn't wow aside from the lovingly drawn gun details and one or two character designs. None of the music really stands out either and I usually just skipped the intro after a few episodes, which is something I generally don't do.
Overall the show is alright, it does have its entertainment and even educational value, but I think a bit more action, a bit more consistency, and a bit more artistry could have pushed this concept further. It's really not bad, but there are better girls-with-guns shows out there.

I've always been a night person and despite everyone trying to convince me to be otherwise I've somehow managed to keep it going into adulthood. I love the privacy and tranquility, and I think it just looks nicer, so right off the bat Call of the Night is appealing, as the series is a love-letter to the Night Owls of the World among so many other things. What I particularly like is that the protagonist isn't painted as a weirdo for preferring the night world, he just marches to the beat of his own drum and as the series progresses we find that many of
...
the characters are similarly drawn to doing things their way in a world that expects them to conform to oftentimes unrealistic expectations.
While the series is ostensibly a vampire love story, it's really more about the complexities within us all, and even the seemingly villainous characters usually have understandable motivations once somebody sits down and gets to know them. The characters do an amazingly good job of actually communicating their feelings and getting to understand each other better, the dialogue doesn't even feel like anime so much as it feels like a group of friends bouncing ideas off of each other and trying to work through their issues. The show gradually exposes deeper and deeper layers of what makes each individual tick and the result is a deeply compelling character study that touches on surprisingly complex topics for something with such a seemingly simple execution.
The visuals and sound are also gorgeous. The animation is fluid, the character designs are striking and expressive, and the backgrounds are wonderful with spectacular use of color. The voice actors do a great job breathing life into the characters and the hip-hop/jazz soundtrack by Creepy Nuts bolsters the already-strong atmosphere with excellent chill-out vibes. Several episodes have scenes where the music just kicks in and you get to vibe along with the characters and those moments are transcendent.
This is a show that fires on every cylinder and one of the most refreshing things I've watched in a while. It's a wholesome, healing show with a great story, great characters, great art, and great music, and an ode to the weirdo in us all. I really hope this gets a second season and I'm definitely going to watch it again once the dub is done so I can appreciate the visuals even more. I guess I'll have to read the manga in the meantime. I got so absorbed into these episodes that sometimes it would be a surprise when the end credits actually hit because I just wanted it to keep going. Call of the Night is at true masterpiece and deserves a watch from anyone who tries to do things a little differently.

Incredibly charming comedy show with a very Golden Age Spongebob-esque sense of humor, except if the main duo was Spongebob and Squidward and Squidward was a hitman for some reason. There were times when I felt it would perhaps be served better by 10 minute episodes, but I got more into it the further it went and was just glad to be along for the ride. The characters are all memorable and very funny, Agiri the Ninja is probably my favorite, and the further you go in the show you start to pick up on certain recurring bits and gags that make the humor all

the richer. The animation does seem to be a bit low-budget but the show makes up for it with great style, character designs, and fantastic color. It's honestly a shame this didn't go on for longer, these characters and this format have tons of potential to be a long-runner. The English dub voices are also very well done with great inflection that sells the comedy and a sharply translated script.

The first few episodes have a few funny moments, but the show is too one-note to justify even 10 episodes. There's basically one joke, which is that the main character is innocent but all the girls around him warp everything he says into something horny. Pervy humor is fine as long as there's some variety and the characters are interesting, but there's no story whatsoever and none of the characters have any depth. The jokes are always the single most predictable punchline possible and good comedy is all about surprise. Visually it's not great either, none of the character designs really stick out outside the

main girl, and the lead guy in particular always looks a little off. This might have worked as a 3 or 4 minute short series, since that's about as long as each scenario usually lasts, but trying to focus on this for 20 straight minutes is a chore and doing that 10 times total is even worse.

A very cute, laid back short comedy with a pleasant vibe and great characters. It's actually educational to an extent if you look up who the different gods are and what their purpose is, so you can learn something from it too. The animation is very well done and incorporates the Egyptian Hieroglyphic style into an anime style nicely. The gags aren't really the laugh-out-loud gut laugh kind of jokes, but they have a subtle charm that's very cute. I always loved ancient Egypt when I was a kid and this was fun to revisit some of what I loved about it.
