Last Exile, from 2003, I believe, is far better than the recent release Fam the Silver Wing. The Aria work is Slice-of-Life. Many people don't like it, but it is wonderful storytelling. There are 3 seasons and an OVA to it, about 54 episodes in all. I love both of them.
If you are into long series, especially good ones, I would recommend the epic Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Another is Monster, one of the best psychological mysteries ever done.
For Josei titles, I recommend Nana, Chihayafuru and Paradise Kiss.
I noticed that you have Elfen Lied as your favorite anime. It never quite got to the top spot in my lists mainly because I watched it after the incredible Last Exile. That series was my #1 series for 6 years only to drop to #2 after I watched the Aria saga. So, Elfen Lied has sat at #2 or #3 since I first watched it. However, no series has had a greater impact on me than Elfen Lied.
I just read your Perfect Blue review. You hit it right on, and you did a fine review. When I found this movie, in 2004, it was a VHS copy. I rented it and took it home to watch. Well, I was completely blown away by it. What an unexpected GEM it turned out to be. It has always remained a favorite of mine and probably is one of the best psychological thrillers ever done in any medium. Satoshi Kon at his very best!
