If I remember correctly, railguns had something to do with mikasa's ability to like launch coins at people. I think that her ability was called "railgun" or something like that do to it's similarity to the actual thing.
Then again, I haven't touched anything related to index or railgun in a while, so what I just said may have been like all bullshit.
Basically an anime season is literally an "anime season". It's seperated into the spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons. It's essentially when new shows come out and end. The fall anime schedule is not complete yet, so it should be coming out in like late August/september.
Maybe. After Story is the sequel so it wouldn't make as much sense watching it first anyway.
Current or classics .... that's a hard question. I usually watch multiple shows at once, and so I balance them. If you look at my current watching list, you'll see that I'm watching new and old shows. If you don't want to do that, I think you should take turns, and watch new shows for a while, and then watch old shows for a while.

Also, a couple of things:
1. there are three seasons, which you SHOULD watch, then there's the ova's and movies that you don't really need to watch.
2. The 2nd season is kinda mediocre, but what happens during the season is sort of important for the third one, so I recommend that you don't skip it.
3. The show might get a bit confusing later on, so I recommend that you check out the Shakugan no Shana wiki if you get mindfucked. http://shakugan.wikia.com/wiki/Shakugan_no_Shana_Wiki
