It was snark. I don't necessarily mind the sports/competition tropes when there's some meat to the topic, like _Hikaru no Go_ - I know there's a lot of depth to go, and so while I might not personally want to devote my life to it, I'm not entirely unsympathetic. Karuta, however, is just too trivial and stupid for me to take seriously: my suspension of disbelief is broken entirely with zero identification with the characters. Try to imagine taking seriously a show about competitive tic-tac-toe or Snakes & Ladders playing... you can't.
Once that's gone, there's not much besides admiring the art & coloring & music (I do like the music), and snarking ('Chihaya, stop crying every damn episode! Chihaya, do you *really* sweat that much? Chihaya, get some damn self-control so you don't smash cards all over the room every other minute!')
