The OTHER quintessential SoL comedy anime, also falls under the CGDCT genre if you ask me. There's memes galore and everybody at least knows about it...so here we go!!
Pretty standard storyline, you've got 4 high school girls just living life and being themselves. As with most SoL comedies, especially ones that are based on a short comedy bit manga, you're going to focus on short scenes as opposed to a huge overarching story. There's about the same structure as you can expect from a show like Azumanga Daioh. It's hard to comment on it, but the little story bits are funny. One thing that DID
...
get old was how many skits were basically like this:
Kagami: Konata, you are so lazy. Why don't you study??
Konata: I try, but...but...anime and manga!!
Kagami: You are never going anywhere in life! You have to study!
Konata: *Insert reference to anime/manga and witty retort*
Miyuki: *Says something moe*
Konata: *Acknowledge moe and say it out loud*
That was a trope that happened too often and got super annoying. However, for every one of those, there were three or four ones that were super funny and very memorable (Timotei!!!). It was definitely enough to keep my attention and make me want to watch more. the one thing that I found astronomically annoying, pointless, and utterly forgettable was Lucky Channel. I'm pretty sure I "get" the parody, but I just found it more annoying than entertaining. I could literally skip every single one of them and wouldn't miss out on anything. If you sit through the first 2 or 3 and find it annoying, just do yourself a favor and skip them. That was why this only got an 8 rank on story. If it weren't for the hilarious bits of the show, I probably would have stopped watching it altogether. Glad I didn't though! Hang in there, it gets better!!
Maybe I'm being mean on the art, but it is a really cartoonish style and is a little weird to process at first. You get used to it afterwards, but in general it's just harder to sit and watch than something with more realistic proportions. Probably seems like a nitpicky point, but that's what my impression was. Take it with a grain of salt.
Dub was good and the music was catchy too. That theme song is definitely going to get stuck in your head. Since a lot of the music in the show just didn't grab me, it fell short of a perfect on that. To be honest though, the dub is definitely one of the better ones and all across the board as well. While Kuragehime had a great dub for certain characters, this one was good no matter what character was talking.
Just like with any SoL, the characters have to be the strong point of the series to give it real life. Yeah there were some stereotypes, but this show had NO inhibitions about calling them out to make a joke regarding it. Konata is the absolute mascot of all anime fans, bar none. She has so many memorable lines and references that it's hard not to love her. If the show had a main character, it would likely be her. Kagami is your tsundere, and a pretty standard fare one at that. She is what she is, so you can't really hate on her for that. She has some funny lines, though she gets a bit repetitive being the grouchy one all the time. Tsukasa is the cute and helpless one, she flakes out but tries her best to do improve. She's lovable because she is such an adorable little mess. Miyuki is the seemingly perfect one, even her imperfections just make her more moe. She is good fuel for some of Konata's commentary and jokes, so she doesn't really get in the way. Out of side characters, you have some extras later on in the show, but my favorite had to be Konata's dad. He's funny and creepy, but you like him because Konata is who she is because of him.
It's a very entertaining anime, but if they gave Lucky Channel the axe, this would have gotten a perfect score. I just plain hated L.C....sorry. Liked the rest of the show though, plus the ending songs that were done live action are hilarious as well. For the parts of the actual show, I loved it and wish there were more episodes to watch! It was a little easier to step away though since the show didn't exactly have cliffhangers.
All in all, this doesn't beat out Azumanga Daioh on quality and watchability, but that doesn't mean it's not a classic in and of itself. It's popular for a reason, it's a great show. I feel some things could have been done better, I also think a 2nd season wouldn't be a bad idea if they kept up with how well they did the 1st one. I definitely found myself quoting the show and laughing at memes I googled for the show. If you consider yourself an anime fan in the LEAST, please watch this show!!

Just finished it last night!
Yeah, the overarching theme I see in reviews in descriptions is "cute girls doing cute things in cute ways". PRETTY much sums up the entire show in that simple statement. It's hard to really comment on the story, because even shows like Lucky Star or Azumanga Daioh have them progressing through high school whereas Ichigo Mashimaro is pretty much just "4 Elementary School girls, older sister, annnnnnnnd go!". It's definitely lighthearted and very easygoing, you need to be patient and relaxed to really enjoy this anime. When you are in the mood for intense action, this is not your go-to. Given
...
that, the stories are simple slice of life (this show epitomizes that statement, IMO) and stick to it. Nobue gets a job, the girls go to the beach, everyone goes to a bath house...don't expect FMA: Brotherhood or Kuragehime style storylines here at all. That having been said, it's sweet seeing all the stuff they do and want to do together. You have to look at kids and go "Aww, how cute" to really "get" this anime.
I'm no expert on art, but the show seemed well done. The girls were drawn well and looked very cute. Nobue kind of had a strange look to her, but not many other adults did, it could just be her expressions though. The environments looked good and everything was smooth, it was an easy anime to watch and looked realistic enough. Nothing mind blowing as there weren't many visuals to highlight, so this got a good but not perfect. It didn't take any risks, but at least it looked good doing it.
Now let me preface this by saying I typically judge an anime's "sound" rating off how good the dub is, if one exists. The theme song and the sub version is what saved this anime BIG TIME. I don't care how lazy you are, avoid the dub at ALL COSTS. It was terrible, ill-timed, and just downright annoying. I was 2 episodes in and switched to the sub, sooo glad I did. Even though I don't speak a lick of Japanese, I could tell the cadence of their voice acting in the Japanese version was way better. That part aside, the theme song was cute and really catchy. I have it stuck in my head soooo often. Ichigo Love!!! :-)
Usually it relies on the characters to make a slice of life enjoyable and fun to watch. Classic archetypes were present here, but I feel some of them just had the volume turned down on them. Miu was the loudest and most outgoing character by far. She is comical and a necessary part of the genre to give it movement, but sometimes you want her to shut up for just a minute or two. She has a purpose and definitely asserts her place in the series. Chika is the straight man, which is fine, but she just comes off as grumpy as opposed to just being the regular do-gooder. I kind of wish she had more character development outside of yelling at Miu and calling her sister a bum (even though she is). We had one episode that delved a bit into her psyche, but I feel she deserved more than one episode. Despite popular opinion, Matsuri was my favorite for a few reasons. She is the adorable, helpless one and her gentle spirit make her an ideal character for this genre and setting. Her shy nature was very cute and it was nice to see her go and do everyday stuff (especially with John!). Ana was another character that didn't get much screen time like Chika. She kinda came off as a crybaby and didn't get much development done for her. There was some OTHER "development" they mentioned, but I'll come back to that later. Nobue was well...kind of a drag. I get that her personality is blase and lazy, but sometimes she felt like a weak plot point that wasted time. The diner episode was a great setup though and couldn't be done without her. She is an ok character, but one I felt could have been better written or developed. She "got her kicks in" on the final episode, which was cool...plus the constantly knocking out Miu is pretty funny.
So enjoyment, yeesh where do I start? I did enjoy this anime a fair amount, but I felt there was some fan service and NOT in a good way. If I'm watching a show about little girls in elementary school, I get REALLY uncomfortable and upset when they try to do any sexualizing of them. Nobue is in college, I could understand some fan service concerning her (the beach episode prank with Miu), but the girls are too young and it's really messed up to do something like that in my opinion. Seeing them do cute everyday stuff and just enjoying life is a great thing to be a part of, if you have nieces or something of that nature, this could remind you of them. I had two girls that they reminded me of and it was kinda funny seeing all the activities and such play out. It's a lighthearted storyline so don't expect massive excitement in any way, you need to be in the right mood to watch this.
So overall, this got about the same rating I gave Tenchi Muyou. This had a lot of potential that seemed to be missed by lack of character development, SOME weak plot premises, and inappropriate fan service that just creeped me out. With these things fixed, this could have easily gotten a 9. I know some of the story tropes are staples for SoL (beach, bathhouse, etc.) but some of the content needed to be toned down on the sexual tangents. For Pete's sake, they are ELEMENTARY AGE GIRLS for crying out loud...can't we just let them be cute and innocent without trying to add perverted content in there? All in all, if SoL is your thing and you like genuinely cute little girls doing cute things, this seems like a great one to watch. Skip the dub, just trust me, and try to overlook the pervert stuff.

I don't know why I've put this review off for so long, perhaps it's because I really wanted to focus and do it justice? Nothing left to do but dive right in...
For those unaware (me at first), "Chuunibyou" is defined in the anime as a term that means (paraphrased) middle school disease or syndrome. This can manifest in different ways, but in this series, it refers to a sort of extreme LARPing obsession where it bleeds into real life more than your typical fantasy nerd stuff does stateside. Someone can think they are indwelt by a demon spirit or harness some ancient power that "commoners"
...
just can't handle or understand. It is typically viewed as something childish or delusional by the non-chuunibyou folks.
It's a decent story, so I don't want to ruin anything. We start off with Yuta having come fresh out of hardcore chuunibyou and wanting to leave it behind him now that he's in high school. His plans slowly unravel as he meets Rikka, a girl deeply steeped in chuunibyou. There is far more to it than just their interaction, it unfurls into a genuinely moving and emotional story. There are many "sweet" moments where it will tug at even the most resilient heartstrings. It has much more structure than a typical SoL anime does, I personally refer to this as a "club" anime, where the binding glue for the group is a school club theme. It has an actual story arc unlike Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star, so idk if this could really be put in the same category. The closest I could compare this to is Kuragehime (out of the animes I've seen/reviewed), but I'll cover the visual differences below. The storyline for this is obviously more youthful since Kuragehime is set in post-high school, so while it may seem a tad more immature it suits the setting for the characters. All in all it's a great storyline, but it didn't quite move me enough to earn a 10.
The art is intensely awesome. It's crisp and well done, plus the "chuunibyou footage" is just plain awesome. The contrast between it and regular footage is just great and a very fun effect. For humor AND for setting mood/perspective it works great. These parts can get you excited and mix things up a bit, plus when the "special effects" get revealed it's pretty funny as well. Great show to look at and very entertaining, so the art earns a solid 10 in my opinion.
This is the second one that I've reviewed based on the subbed version instead of a dub. It's hard to tell, but nothing stands out as particularly bad or annoying (though Dekomori can go overboard sometimes). Music's not bad either, but I wouldn't call it mind blowing. Not much to say on this for me, other than it seems to be good, but not phenomenal.
Like with most anime I like, the characters are a huge drive for the show and what make me like it. Yuta is the main protagonist and isn't a bad one at that. He's a nice guy and you can understand where he's coming from and what his motivations are. He may come off a little cookie cutter, but I feel the premise itself carries a lot of weight and he does well interacting with the other characters. The "Dark Flame Master" bits he does and his voice are pretty funny, definitely like those. Rikka's our main gal and she's certainly interesting. At first you're going to find her annoying, but after a while you come to love her and all her crazy little quirks. There's no series without her and you wouldn't want to even see anything like that happen. Nibutani is the opposite of Rikka, you start off liking her and will PROBABLY lose your like for her after that. She becomes a bit more tolerable later on, but she shows her true colors eventually and that's the worst time to deal with her. She redeems herself later on and you can see how she is very necessary. Her interaction with Dekomori is nothing short of hilarious. Kumin is a kind of bland character in this season of the show, mainly because we just don't hear much from her. She has a funny schtick to her, but it keeps us from really getting to know her. She's an ok character for what she is. Saving the best for last, you are a total dingus if you don't love Dekomori. She's over the top, but you wouldn't have her any other way. Her and Nibutani are one of the best comedic pairs I've seen in anime and it gets even better in the second season. Without Dekomori, there really wouldn't be much of a Nibutani presence. Fun, energetic, and never short of words...Dekomori is best waifu :p
So as far as watching and enjoying this anime, I have to say it's one of the most fun to watch that I've seen. Since they do have the ability to do cliffhangers given that there's a story arc, I found this one much harder to put down than others. Just like with Kuragehime, I kept going "Uggghh....ok just ONE more episode...". I can't really rate it for repeat entertainment, but I can definitely say I enjoyed it the first time through. I felt the ending was great and exactly what it needed to close things off. However...it's NOT the end once this season is done!!! XD
If you want something with more story arc depth than a SoL set in high school, but want a feel-good "club anime" that will get you laughing, this is the place to look. The "chuunibyou footage" can satisfy the desires of some of the fantasy/action addicts while giving you the elements of having a realistic storyline and good character development. It's definitely a comedy and has some strong romantic elements, but I feel it's done tastefully. The drive of the story wasn't bad, just wasn't as strong as I felt the reactions of the characters needed to be justified. This one is just short of perfect, definitely worth a watch!!!

What can you say? It's a mid-90's harem anime featuring your standard average Joe as the main protagonist.
So this is kind of hard to review since the nostalgia factor is really strong with this one. I can remember watching this as a kid and I couldn't WAIT for the next episode to come on. If we had DVD sets like we do now, I would have pooped my pants. That's why it will be difficult to be objective about the anime, it's one that I have so many fond memories of watching that the rose-tinted glasses are firmly welded to my face. I'll do
...
my best though....
Tenchi is an average Joe kinda guy, however he happens upon the most random, far-fetched, and by most all accounts implausible scenarios that land him with several strange women living in the house with him, his dad, and his grandpa. It's a classic example of the "harem anime" type and boy does it capitalize on it! Practically all the girls want a piece of Tenchi in some form or another. Their reasoning can be different, but Tenchi literally gets fought over. Every guy's dream, right? House full of hot women that just wanna get in your pants. As far as story goes, this was earlier on so it can get away with it. There is a branched-out storyline in both that makes them more interesting and epic, but I wouldn't exactly call it awe-inspiring. Carnival episode in Tenchi Universe is my favorite!!
For a 90's anime it looks pretty good as far as animation. Decently smooth, characters are proportional, and of course the explosions/lasers look cool. All in all it's good to look at.
I grew up watching the dub, so it's what I'm used to and feel most at home with. I can't say the voice acting is stellar, but it's not bad either. Tenchi can be kind of annoyingly nasally at times, but it almost comes off comedic for me given his personality. Ryoko's well done and so is Washu. The others are fine, but nothing special. Music wasn't especially memorable for me, but it wasn't annoying...standard fare on that.
Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe use the same characters, but with different origin stories and interactions. I like Tenchi Muyo, but prefer Universe to be honest. Both series feature fan service, so just get ready for that if you watch this anime. Some of the characters are more interesting than others (Ryoko > Mihoshi), but there are at least comedic elements to all of them. Hands down, Washu is my favorite.
So why did I rank it amazingly entertaining? I put this in the same category as watching Beavis and Butthead for fart jokes and stupid cheap laughs...you're getting what you expect and it doesn't advertise otherwise. The show got kind of disappointing when they tried to get too serious, but overall I remember the funny episodes the most. True, the nostalgia glasses are on when I watch this show, but I still think it holds up on the entertaining portion. It's an anime that can put you in a good mood when you watch it. It's so silly that it's good, like anything that's a comedy not to be taken too seriously. Being as entertaining as it is, I feel it hits the nail on the head.
All things considered it's a good comedic anime. More harem and fantasy than anything else, it doesn't focus on realistic comedic scenarios as its strength like you'd see in Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun or Azumanga Daioh. It goes for really "wet" humor and goofy setups to get the laugh. That doesn't make it bad, it's just the style it was written in, and in the mid-90's this was to be expected almost. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Just be ready for a harem storyline, goofy jokes, and boobs too.

I wasn't told the translated name of the anime until after I had watched some of it, thanks to my sister who thought I might pre-judge the anime for having a feminine name. It didn't make a difference, I watched it anyways and here's what I thought!!
Probably not very impacting to others, but I was honestly moved by the story. You really felt for Tsukimi and understood where she was coming from. She's a girl who has moved to the city and has a very intense obsession with jellyfish. She loves to draw them and knows practically everything there is to know about them. She
...
lives in a communal living situation with other "Otakus" of various things. Mayaya loves 3 Kingdoms, Banba loves trains, Jiji loves---well they all have their obsessions, we'll put it that way. The girls live in fear of the "stylish" girls who intimidate them beyond belief, practically turning them into stone that can't speak or move. This is a visual gag in the show, but it's pretty consistent through the whole series. Tsukimi meets someone who sticks up for her early on and it turns out they become very close friends...watch the show for the rest, I don't want to ruin anything!
The music, especially the introduction, for the show is pretty good. It's something I'd actually listen to on its own which is really saying something. The voice acting on the dub is hit or miss, it really boils down to the characters. Some of them are spot-on (Kuranosuke) while some make you just cringe (Mayaya). I'm not sure if it's poor direction or what, but it was a mixed bag on that, mainly isolated to different characters. The main characters are done well enough to where the show is worth using the dub in my opinion.
The main characters are the strength of this show, those being Tsukimi and Kuranosuke. Some side characters like Shuu, Kuranosuke's brother, get a side story and decent screen time, but the bulk is Tsukimi and Kuranosuke. You delve into their psyche a great deal and realize they don't do things flippantly, especially Kura. and his most notable "quirk". They have the most depth and make for great interaction with one another in the show. The strong story elements keep their dialogue and conversations fresh, as do some of the other comedic elements of the show which I won't spoil (Oh boy!! lol). Commentary from Clara is also very enjoyable and funny.
I really wish I could say the same about some of the side characters, but they were honestly the weakest part of the show for me. The voice acting may have had something to do with it, but I think I found Jiji the funniest and she barely talked (couldn't really hear her either). Chieko was an interesting character and had some good bits, some more from her would have been good. Banba had a couple of moments of humor, but Mayaya was almost unbearable for me. This may have been in part because of the voice acting, but her character seemed to add very little and an episode where she barely talked was all the more enjoyable to me because of that. Shuu was a dry character, but was used in humorous ways very well. The uncle (Saburouta) had a schtick that I found hilarious, so scenes with him were definitely enjoyable. Yoshio was a very minor character, but shined when he had a chance. I realize the girls had a certain personality type to fulfill, but Tsukimi was just as awkward while being much more enjoyable.
This is a SoL that felt much different in my opinion, there was a bit more at stake here with the main storyline. It was involving and you watched to keep watching, not just because of the cliffhangers. While there are some loose ends you'd like to see tied in the anime, the ending is still very VERY good. I didn't feel slided, just like I wanted to see more. It's an anime I could watch over again, but the fact that it's so story driven means that it might not be as impacting as the first time you saw it. Still, the comedic gags and other elements make it very humorous. If the voice acting was better across the board, this would have gotten a better rating. The story and main characters is really what carries this anime. Suffer through the other girls and you'll eventually be rewarded for it ("I got alll dolled up for Uncle!"). If you like SoL, this is definitely worth checking out.
Every girl is a princess :)

An enjoyable RomCom anime that is very "self-aware", taking plenty of opportunities to comment on or poke fun at manga's quirks and cliches.
This anime is up my alley because what's focused on most is the characters and their comedic interactions with each other. It can take what would otherwise be a bland story premise, and then make it enjoyable just because the characters are that likeable. Nozaki's aloof and oblivious nature makes him a classic "my art is my life" archetype. He never really takes a day off as he's always focused on what he can add to or use to enhance his manga,
...
but he doesn't take it or himself too seriously, he's just always thinking about his art. He may come off pretentious at first, but that isn't the case once you get to know him. Sakura is a decent main character, but she comes off kind of bland on her own without others to interact with. Her awkward attempts to grow her relationship with Nozaki are natural and seem like genuine scenarios. It can get a bit much at times, you sort of wish she'd just carry on and that the scene would end. Standard RomCom stuff though, it's the central plotline of the show after all.
The supporting characters are great, giving the show much needed flavor since things with Nozaki and Sakura can get dry at times. Mikoshiba is hilarious and one of the characters we are introduced to early on. When someone calls his bluffs, the reactions are priceless. Kashima and Hori's interactions are great, as are the exchanges between Hori and Nozaki as well. Seo is a character that works great in smaller, concentrated doses. Adding Wakamatsu gives some much needed balance, as her character can be very abrasive. The series does a good job keeping a cycle of characters flowing so we don't get tired of them. It may seem like an adaption technique to make up for flaws in character writing, but at least they are focusing on what works.
No spoilers, but the ending was kind of lackluster. It wasn't a BAD ending, just disappointing. It also feels like it stopped short, as if a 2nd season were almost planned, but it never happened. We had so much to explore with the side characters that it felt like the anime should have been twice as long. Regardless, it was solid and worth watching for the laughs and the characters involved. If you don't like SoL RomComs then skip this, it will NOT be up your alley. I gave this a high rating because of how easy it was to watch and likeable it was. It's a genre I prefer, so naturally I'm going to think of it positively. The male characters in this show were very likeable, something I don't always run into with the anime I've watched. Definitely worth a watch.

I'd say this is the show that got me into anime not televised on Adult Swim or Toonami. I owe the discovery of this to my little sister.
This show perfectly sums up the comedic slice of life anime genre for me, at least as it pertains to high school girls. We're introduced to several high school girls, all with very distinct personalities, and how they came to be friends or interact with each other. Osaka has a slow start, but keep watching the show, there's a reason she's one of the most popular characters! It isn't just the main crew that brings laughs, the
...
teachers are well written and hands-on (especially Kimura lol) with the main characters. I'd say the characters and their personalities really make the show, it's definitely where the most love went into.
The music is elegantly simple and very catchy, it's a soundtrack that doesn't get in the way, but doesn't come off useless. On the subject of audio, one of the biggest strengths of this anime is the voice acting. Arguably one of the best dubs out there, you can focus on enjoying the show without HAVING to spend time reading the subs. The visual gags and expressiveness of the characters is not missed since the dub enables you to focus more on the animation.
The stories have a loose connection to one another, but don't really follow a hard story arc. There's references to past episodes, but you could pick up the series anywhere and not be completely lost. I'd recommend seeing the whole series in order, but it's not the end of the world to skip around some if they aren't all available. You might not catch some of the best references (Father hats and Yukarimobile) if you skip though.
Some of the characters get more love than others do, partly due to focus on their characters. Kaorin starts as a main character and then becomes more of a side character. The emphasis on her single obsession in the show makes her a bit one-dimensional, but I feel with more time she could have been a better developed character. Yomi is a fantastic character that just doesn't get enough screen time in my opinion. Outside of her dysfunctional friendship with Tomo, we don't get much of her. She can seem like one of the more grumpy or witchy characters just because we are often seeing her at her worst, since Tomo really gets on her nerves. While Sakaki is a nice character, she gets more attention than I think she is due. She has consistency with her shy and quirky personality, but can be dull at times unless she's interacting with another character in a comedic way. Tomo definitely grows on you and is great when interacting with other characters. She may be annoying at first, but you'll come to love her antics in time. Chiyo is the prodigy child that would be classified as the "straight man" in western comedies. She doesn't really cut up and tends to be the butt of the jokes or pranks from others. Her being younger and more tightly wound than the others does make for some comedic moments, but she really needs another character to give her something to work with. I saved the best for last with Osaka, she's by far one of the most comedic and lovable characters in the series. You could honestly make the whole thing about her and you'd have a great series. She has a slow start, but as the episodes progress she will have ROFL in no time (Go Team Sea Slug!!). She gets a fair amount of screen time considering what she brings to the table, plus you just never know what Osaka is going to say next.
Yukari is their homeroom teacher and is chock full of personality. The first 5 minutes of episode 1 set the tone for Yukari in the entire series. While adults may be silent or non-existent in many animes, she is most assuredly in the fray. Her snarky, unapologetic brand of tough love for the students is evident in nearly every interaction ("Of course, I'm flying to Neptuuuuune!"). The show would most definitely be missing something if she was not involved, I would almost peg her as a main character given how involved and well-written she is. Kurosawa is another teacher and is friends with Yukari. They get along but bicker on occasion, Yukari is also quite competitive with her, desiring to be regarded as a "cool teacher" like Kurosawa (also called Nyamo by Yukari). Mr. Kimura is without a doubt the creepiest and most unpredictable of the teachers. A classical lit. teacher, he admits readily that the reason he started teaching is because "[he] loves high school girls!". His unhealthy infatuation with Kaorin comes to a head many times and is nothing short of hysterical. Kimura is full of surprises himself, there is more to him than meets the eye.
All in all, if you like witty and random SoL comedies about school, this will be up your alley. I didn't really take to the genre until I saw this anime. It's very quotable, re-watchable, and can just plain put you a good mood. It's a shame there weren't more episodes, but I feel this anime went for quality over quantity. Still, it would have been nice to see just ONE MORE Summer break or Culture Festival episode!!
