Don't worry I know some others who feel the way your feeling about the timeline. its best to watch dragon ball Super after dragonball z since they keep it closer to the continuation for the most part. This is still way before dbz ended so keep that in mind especially when you start the show.

As for the timeline it was mentioned there was a little amount of time after majin buu's defeat but in the story they are not specific on when exactly that was which is quite tough to decipher. Also if you haven't seen the movies then thats good because it would spoil some of the story thats happening in DB Super.

Its safer to start DB Super Now at this point and the movies much later which is much straight forward.
