I think Hollywood is just trying to keep the gravy train running with all these live-action adaptations. They have absolutely no sense of shame. I mean, just look at some of the 'original' mainstream dross that they spew out. Whatever anime franchise they get their grubby hands on is a sure-fire fail. Hey, even though it wasn't a Japanese animation, the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action movie is supposed to be a real stinker. As a fan of the Avatar (Aang and Korra) animations, I'm avoiding it to preserve my precious memories of the originals!
I don't know much about the Star Wars franchise but I've heard various people and sources say that the Clone Wars animated series is good, and helps get the franchise back on the right track after it had lost its way for quite some time.
I don't think live-action can capture the magic of animations because pretending some well-know human actor has superpowers and abilities and then using some special effects to convince the audience that they're genuine doesn't really work with me. I just keep thinking 'they're only acting' all the way through. I feel you can much better use your imagination with animations, and it better lends itself to fantasy and the supernormal/supernatural, as a creative medium.
Haha, I haven't read The Catcher in the Rye myself. I just got that info from Wikipedia lol. I'm not really a super fan of GITS tbh, more just a casual admirer of the anime. A character called the Laughing Man (a highschool age kid himself) in the first GITS season, uses that iconic quotation to cover up his face when he appears on any tv/surveillance footage. He's basically a criminal and he can hack any system to cover his face with that famous quote like this:
I've not had any chicken for months so at the moment I'd say I was a pescetarian - someone who eats fish, but no animals, mammals, or otherwise. Well, if you're satisfied with just having me as your sole friend, then fair enough. It's not a part of the MAL rules that you have to reach out to hundreds of people lol.
Haha, well, Ass Class is a shorter version than saying/typing the full thing, plus it introduces a bit of cheeky innuendo - no pun intended :)
You do seem to write quite a lot for a new acquaintance. 6000 is a lot more than it might seem at first though!
Ah, it is quite rare that someone on here has some praise for live-action adaptations. I've not seen it myself but I heard that Scarlett Johanson movie bombed, but that's not to say it's without its merits though. I don't if you have seen or even heard of The Promised Neverland but there's to be a live-action adaptation of that, but it's a Japanese movie. The next big western forthcoming adaptations I've heard about are One Punch Man and My Hero Academia lol. How do you think they will handle it, are you interested in watching, and do you think they'll be any good?
Yeah, that deaf-mute quote from GITS is a reference to The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. It was a novel intended for adults but is often read by adolescents for its themes of angst and alienation, and as a critique on superficiality in society. It has been translated widely and around one million copies are sold each year, with total sales of more than 65 million books. The novel's protagonist Holden Caulfield has become an icon for teenage rebellion. The novel also deals with complex issues of innocence, identity, belonging, loss, connection, sex, and depression. Sooo, now you know :)
I'm just listening to that Caravan Palace song Lone Digger now. It's a video of a live performance on Jools Holland. I remember Jools from back in the day in the UK lol. It's a good tune but her voice isn't the best (live). It's a fun tune though. I used to have a cat but not anymore. I don't eat mammals though, only fish and sometimes chicken.
How are you enjoying your experience with MAL so far?
Haha, don't worry about the long first reply, I get a lot of messages from MAL friends and some of them can be quite long. The longest I've received so far was over 6000 words lol.
Well, rather than talking about, or dwelling upon, the series you're not so interested in, let's focus on what we have in common. Yeah, Ass Class, AOT, and Hinamatsuri are in my top 10 faves list, and the other 3 you mentioned I gave 9's to. You should add some things to your top 10's as it doesn't take too long to do. You can even add them before you've updated all your series watched. Have you seen any of the new GITS installment - the one from this season that's in 3D? I've seen all the GITS except for the Arise series of mini-movies and this latest one. I thought the Innocence movie (artwork, OST, and thought-provoking philosophy) was rather fantastic but it seems surprisingly underrated here on MAL. The two series are amongst the strongest anime I've ever seen, although it's been like 5 years since I last saw them. I'd definitely like to get around to rewatching season 1 and 2 in the not too distant future. 'What I thought I'd do was pretend I was a deaf-mute' :)
I think I heard another friend say Beastars gave them Zootopia vibes although I've never seen that show myself. I love the OP song for Beastars. It's an upbeat jazzy number with a walking bass line that's quite different from the usual JPop and JRock OP's. Check it out (it's only a minute and a half):
Thanks for the request. The MAL stats say we haven't got any shared anime but in your bio it says you have a lot to add, so I guess there might be many we share. It's only your third day after joining, so a warm welcome to MAL :)
I'm rewatching Beastars (but in English dub this time). Have you seen it?
