“Beauty is no quality in things themselves: It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them; and each mind perceives a different beauty. One person may even perceive deformity, where another is sensible beauty; and every individual ought to acquiesce in his own sentiment, without pretending to regulate those of others. To seek the real beauty, or real deformity, is as fruitless an enquiry, as to pretend to ascertain the real sweet or real bitter.”
― David Hume, Of the Standard of Taste
In simple words, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When it comes to evaluating anime or pieces of media, no one can be truly objective. Our past, people, and experiences will always affect how we perceive the world around us. General standards in justifying qualitative views are simply popular agreements. Own personal preference and perspective are essentially, entirely "taste".
Therefore, I hope you enjoy my attempt to reason my taste: (Currently Revising, might need some good writers to help me LOL)
10 - Masterpiece
This anime masterfully executes its delivery through a story and cast of characters that are both extremely polished. The compelling plot is consistently complex and complete while progressively innovative to expectations. Characters' motivations and developments are fully fleshed out. Clichés and tropes never reduce the quality but are showcased to its benefit; It also impresses with classic, top-notch components such as its music and art. Plot and emotions are skillfully constructed into a build-up of a rollercoaster that once speeds off, it is impossible to settle for just one episode. Each element of this ambition essentially contributes to a message that influences the audience's mindset through a well-crafted, unparalleled experience.
9 - Great
It's a small touch away from a masterpiece. The anime may not be polished from start to finish, but certainly earns its way in painting its strong message and living up to it beautifully. While flawed in its consistency of quality and pacing, it is an understatement to say this anime nails engaging its audience in its feats and ambitious plot. It accomplishes its goals with characters that greatly grow and developing along the way to fulfill the story's heavy undertaking.
8 - Very Good
Although it is many steps away from being perfect, it is still a step up from the standard expectations of being simply good and deserves to be an outstanding, unique classic. The execution is just right and provides an appreciated refreshing experience. This anime itself has ample personality, style, and character to show off. Super eventful and entertaining as a whole, this anime is a blast to watch. The impact it aims to generate is nothing short of iconic and exhilarating.
7 - Good
Substantial to have characters with personalities that are interesting enough to enjoy as logically justified and authentic rather than overlooked with generic and boring writing. The story itself may have minimum flawed logic or formulaic, predictable story-telling but executed an experience that felt worthwhile to recommend wholeheartedly.
6 - Fine
They can still be greatly enjoyed for specific reasons, not worthwhile enough to be considered as satisfactory. Generally slightly better than bland and can be good with a bit more flavor. There possibly could be much promise to satisfy but ultimately doesn't pull it off to its perceived potential. Characters are mostly insipid and dull while the plot is generic enough to be bored with.
5 - Average
It wasn't "Bad" per se, but close to, unless it was meant to only target a young audience. Otherwise, if it wasn't a children's' anime, this wasn't fine. It felt like a chore and the characters were quite annoying to watch. Most of the parts that were annoying were bloated with cliche, cheesiness, and low effort that dreamed to be entertaining.
4 - Bad
With a little change of direction, this could have been fine or meh, but unfortunately falls off. Delivery loses its way to provide an experience that was worthwhile rather than one that was disappointing, bland, and incoherent.
3 - Very Bad
Altogether every aspect is very underwhelming. It may or may not have presented a pertinent exposition and didn't follow through. Possibly an empty shell that looks nice on the outside but void of coherent, logical, and consistent substance.
2 - Horrible
Blank slate without a single interesting development within the story or characters. Elements and details like character growth and plot points, if any, are just inconveniently shoehorned into the story with minimal, nonsensical information.
Besides degenerate horrors that should never be made, put on my list, or watched by me, this is for anime that cannot possibly be any disappointingly worse. It is a wonder but also disheartening how there was at least one person that agreed to this.
