And now you might be saying: Clannad is the best thing ever, nothing can compare(post anime depression). I suggest you go watch Kanon which is the second anime that KyoAni made for their Key adaptations. The third one is Air but that one isn't that good. Kanon is really good.
You are oversimplifying things. When Akio went to the forest and wished for nagisa's well being, she ultimately got connected to the city. That means that the illusionary world(where the light orbs are contained) now feeds off of nagisa's connection with the town with results in her weak body.
Years later, she falls in love with Tomoya. That result in the illusionary world sucking the life force of Nagisa which results in her death.
Ushio then inherits her weak body and her connection. She also dies which prompts Tomoya to teleport to the illusionary world as a light orb(death?). Ushio is also reborn there and she is connected with the illusionary W. Ushio, because she arrived there first, sensed a light orb and put it in a container [robot](tomoya).
They live together until Ushio remembers her memories from the canon world. That means that she remembers her wish to save her mother.
Ushio then informs Tomoya about the light orbs and sends him back in time to collect as many orbs as possible.
From now on, there are many timelines in the goal to collect as many orbs as possible. Tomoya ends up with Tomoyo(duhyes) and Kyou. Btw, the light orbs serve as an energy force for the illusionary world and if you forgot already, because the IW didn't have any light orbs, it had to feed off of Nagisa's life force.
This all happens before the anime. From now on, I am summarizing the anime's timeline.
In this timeline, he is able to collect more orbs. That permits Ushio to send Tomoya back to when Ushio was born aka when Nagisa died. He then used the addiotional light orbs to save Nagisa.
Now that IW's Ushio's wish came true, she goes to connect with timeline's Ushio (they have the same soul).
With Nagisa and Ushio alive, the IW now feeds off of their connection with Tomoya which is enough to sustain it.
I am finally proud of you, Justin. However, do not go on forums, clannad soundtracks on youtube or any discussion about any anime because they contain massive spoilers for clannad.
If you get spoiled, you will only get 25% of the effect.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that Fate/stay night is an adaptation from a so-called HENTAI GAME while Fate/zero is an adaption from the novel written by Gen Urobuchi. That said, expect a very harem environnement in staynight. The main character lives with 5 girls.
Fate/stay night is the adventure and love story between a 15 year old philosopher and a 400 year old badass king that is a queen. However, since it appears that you like sexist main characters, I think you will like Fate/stay night since in the start, the main character is a whiny and sexist character. It is in this one where you will find the most romance. It is very cliche, if you know what I mean. Shonen, friendship is magic kind of thing.
Fate/zero, in my personal opinion, is the vastly superior of the two. it provides the watcher with a sense of excitement. It has a more mature theme as it actually presents itself, with its color palette, as a dark show. This show excels in its dialogue, however long at points, in its characters and in its story, basicly, everything you need in a good anime. In Fate/zero, you get an independant and strong female lead in Saber, a badass (somewhat a la Lelouch) king in Archer, and my favorite character, Iskandar aka ISKANBROOOO. Between the two main characters, the romance is already established (wife/husband) and they have a child. I suggest watching this in 1080p because the animation is among the best of the best in the anime industry. In addition to theses already great elements, Yuki Kajiura, one of the best composers, composed the eargasmic music to this masterpiece.
Fate/stay night is the sequel released before Fate/zero with is the prequel. It is like Star Wars as Fate/stay night tells the story of the 5th holy grail war while Fate/zero tells the story of the 4th. I recemmend you watch both. Fate/stay night will reveal the ending of zero but just get the bad things over with to move to better things yuno.

TOMOYO FTW
And yes, Clannad is wonderful.
