Their physical abilities don't matter. The anime industry has plenty of fantasy anime about NEETs in similar worlds (e.g. Outbreak Company). Since they're fantasies, their physical abilities are the least of worries. It's no need to be literal. NGNL's problem is trying too hard to be smart when they shoot themselves in the foot several times. If they provided backstories to reveal something about their pasts or lives in general, the show would be stronger.
Maybe your anime list isn't accurate, because SAO isn't listed. Therefore, I don't know why you'd assume SAO is worse when you haven't even watched it. Nevertheless, you're right. NGNL is nowhere near as bad as SAO.
