School Rumble, it was said that this was somewhat the inspiration behind Kaguya-Sama. I can see that. What I did not expect was how goddamn good it was going to be.
Look everyone that I know knows that I love a good comedy. The dubbed comedy in this? Out of this world.
Comedy is always subjective, so it cannot always be said my humor will taste the same as yours. What I can guarantee though is you will laugh at this show!
This is up there, if not better than the likes of Nichijou and Danshi Kokose Nichijou. This had the same gag-humor style of SKET-Dance
...
and Gintama.
The Story:
It is about a gangster named Harima who likes a girl called Tenma. What unfolds is an insanely hilarious story. Tenma lokes this other guy, and while Harima likes Tenma Harima is always roped into some other love "affair" even though he does not love this other girl. It is hilarious, and questionable that nobody denies love affairs.
The only problem I have with this show is the story is not *as* polished as Aka Akasaka's gem of Kaguya-Sama. The Story is literally carrying Kaguya-Sama.
One thing to note though, I can absolutely tell you that the humor is better in School Rubmel than in Kaguya-Sama. The thing is, Ishigami was my favorite character in Kaguya and he is amazing. The problem is he does not have that many lines.
In School Rumble? Both Harima and Tenma are my favorite characters. AKA the main characters
The Humour:
I cannot understate how good the humor is. The thing is, some people might like it cuz of the "degenerate" humor, or the over-the-top humor used.
I loved it though. I laughed at almost every joke. This era of anime was so good, both this and Sket Dance.
The Animation: This is where it falls a *little* short as it is an older show, but the character design is amazing, and the expressions are AMAZING too. If it was animated modernly, I feel like the animation style would have taken a more conservative approach so I do not think this show would have the same zeal and style as shows back then have. That is why I am glad it was made when it was made. If there was a little better animation, that would have been good.
Also 4:3 was the norm, glad I have VLC that can change that to 16:9 by zooming in (A sin in the anime community maybe but made the show much more watchable)
The Music: It was alright not much to comment. The OP was super good and the first few seconds of ED was quite good as well.
All in all, this was an amazing amazing show. Seriously underrated, and the humour is amazing! Might be a one-time watch as it is not that rewatchable but amazing nevertheless.
8/10!
Thanks!

It has been a while since I have sat down and straight-up binged a show. Maybe the last time was Gintama? I am not sure. What I can say though is I binged this one, and sat through 5 hours straight without breaks for this show.
This show was a roller-coaster of emotions. I had a blast, cried a little, and felt many mixed feelings all in between.
Overtake is about a guy who wants to win a race. Pretty simple premise, I will admit. But what's more, this season focused on the backstories of these characters. Kouya is one of the MCs, and he is a
...
photographer. Before he photographed for a race, he never knew any racing terms. But instantly, he fell in love with a team. It was by accident. We then progress through these 12 episodes about how much he is willing to do for this team, and how much stamina he has.
For then a couple of episodes, we take a drastic turn to what feels like a drama because for 3-4 episodes straight we have nothing to do with driving. We explore Kouya's trauma and backstory, not revealed due to spoilers, and man I rarely cry but this made me have tears. Not full-on crying, but let's just say this was near Your Lie in April levels. Seriously good backstory.
Finally, we have more racing, as expected.
The animation is great, the music is good (Not the biggest fan of the OP), and everything else was good. There was a lot of CGI, something you would expect with a racing show.
My biggest gripe with this show, however, was the fact that this was labeled a racing show. Half of the show was racing, and not even like technical engine parts or stuff like that; pure racing. The other half, though, felt like it was just a drama show, something like Clannad or whatnot.
It was a shock to say the least. I like drama's and this portrayal was very very good in fact. I wish we had more on Kouya, like at this point I do not care too much about the racing or driving, Kouya's story should have had a little more in it and more complexity and then wow that would've been an amazing 12 episodes.
I love racing shows, Initial D is one of my favorites! The racing here was actually surprisingly great, way way better than MF Ghost.
But If this had a little more clarity it would have been a 9/10
Instead, I will give it an 8/10. It is still an amazingly good show and well deserves the 8/10. Literally 2nd best racing show behind Initial D (not a high bar to pass though as MF Ghost, and Wangan Midnight were sub-par).
Thanks!

Man, I did not expect Sket Dance to be this good—honestly, it's one of, if not the best Comedy animes of all time. Words cannot describe how much I laughed at this.
Sket Dance is about a group of 3 high schools part of the Sket-Dan club that is aimed to help people with various tasks. The premise reminded me of Violet Evergarden's way of storytelling, in that it isn't solely about the main character but in-depth telling of many supporting characters. It is like that for Sket Dance as well, I know a lot about the supporting characters too.
The 3 characters are amazing. Bossun, Onihime,
...
and Switch. Bossun's backstory is wholesome yet tragic, and he is a great guy. Onihimes backstory is quite interesting and tragic too. Switch's backstory is tragic and quite messed up, to say the least. It is insane how in such a wholesome comedic anime there are just like a random 3-to 4 episodes of some of the most depressing storytelling ever.
Switch is by far my favorite character. He is somewhat relatable, comedic, and downright amazing. He adds so much to the scene although I wished he had more lines in the show. Bossun and Onihime were also great, and I enjoyed their presence a lot.
When it comes to comedy, it is always very subjective. This show reminded me of Gintama's legendary comedy, and dare I say this show is better with comedy. The one aspect of Gintama I did not enjoy as much was Kagura over-acting and I felt bad for Shinpachi a lot. Here that does not happen, and in fact, it is very wholesome and everyone is having a great time. Honestly my favorite comedy 2nd only to Nichijou's amazing contemporary SoL comedy, but alas that is something that will not change.
The amazing part of this show, and better than Nichijou for that matter, is the sheer quantity of jokes that hit home. Every single joke I laughed at. For a show with 77 episodes, you'd think a couple would miss.
Nope. Every single one I laughed, laughed hard at. I still cannot preface this enough, I watch a lot of comedy shows. a LOT. And yet at least half of the jokes fall super flat. The anime I finished before this, Maid-Sama, in my opinion, was a snooze-fest in terms of comedy. Maybe its just this over-the-top gag humor that enlightens me, especially saiki-K and gintama-type shows.
It is still crazy that this show is so underrated. Like no one knows about this show. Even I only heard about it because of Gintama, otherwise I would not have watched this gem which is definitely in my top 15 now, maybe top 10. Literal Kaguya-Sama levels of humour.
With Kaguya-sama they balanced an amazing story while this did not have *as* much of a developed story. I felt the love-aspect of it was quite rushed/forced. Also a lot of stories went unfinished, maybe its that the anime is done but there's more manga due to budget issues. But still, super unfortunate I do not hear more about Chuu-sensei or the samurai story.
All in all amazing amazing anime, receiving a rare 10/10
Thanks a ton Sket-Dance!!!

I went into Maid-sama with somewhat high hopes. I am usually a fan of romance-comedies. Kaguya-Sama, Horimiya, etc. They were all super super good animes.
This one?
Not as much I will get into why.
The story is about this dirt poor girl who is amazing and athletic and the president of this school. She works part time as a maid at a maid cafe hence the anime name, Maid Sama.
Then this Usui guy who is smarter and more athletic comes and pesters her all the time and they both have some feelings for each other.
They both good off with side characters and it is somewhat comedic.
...
My problems.
Bro... this Usui guy is not only a creep but he has the patience of a tibetan monk.
This maid girl has the fuse of a 2 year old and this Usui guy does all these favors, protects her, and does so many favors for her yet all she does is be mean and pick fights with him. Almost NEVER is she kind to him I feel so so bad for Usui.
Second of all, they took 26 EPISODES to confess... This should have taken the Hormiya approach and confess mid-season.
Instead they dragged it on. Better than Rent a Girlfriend at least. Still it was like watching paint dry trying to see the story progress.
Finally, the comedy was not that good either. Kaguya Sama is the gold standard of Rom-Coms, and boy oh boy is the comedy so much better in Kaguya Sama its not even close
Maybe its age you might say?
Nope. Azumanga Daioh has really good comedy as well, and thats from the early 2000's.
All in all I was dissappointed by this show. Usually I LOVE high school comedies/romances. Nichijou, Azumanga, Kaguya, Horimiya, Danshi Nichijou, all such such good shows. This one will not be joining that list
5/10
Thanks!

And the Genroku anime is over. I just love anime that unravels on lesser-known Japanese things.
Shogi, Karuta, Hanafuda, now Rakugo. These animes interest me the most since I learn more from them.
This anime went above and beyond in terms of how it executed the story.
This season was about the master who was trained last season, and he mentors an up-and-coming master who wants to redefine Rakugo. This old master wants to take Rakugo with him to the grave but this guy is not having any of it. In the meantime, Sukeroku (The intern) is wanting to keep it alive and practices with all the might
...
hes god.
In the meantime, the old masters friends daughter is staying with the master, and she got pregnant since she wants to be a mother.
Soi Sukeroku marries her. In this season we also see some time they spend together.
We also see my favorite Rakugo story, Juugemu!!!
Jugemu Jugemu Go-Kō-no-Surikire Kaijari-suigyo no Suigyō-matsu Unrai-matsu Fūrai-matsu Kū-Neru Tokoro ni Sumu Tokoro Yaburakōji no Burakōji Paipo Paipo Paipo no Shūringan Shūringan no Gūrindai Gūrindai no Ponpokopii no Ponpokonā no Chōkyūmei no Chōsuke
One of the reasons I watched this anime is a canadian guy saying the story of Juugemu.
Anyway the reason I am rating this lower is because this did not have as mucbh of a weightage as I would like.
The first season was masterfully crafted, but this one felt a little boring in my opnion
that is until the last 8 episodes where it was all brought together and was very interesting once again...
The music is amazing, rakugo stories told were amazing.
All in all 7/10 probably going back to high school rom-coms again
Thanks!

The boy and the Heron.
I have been waiting for like 2 years ever since word got out Miyazaki was not retiring.
I think this is his last movie tho which is super sad as well.
The boy and the heron (Or how do you live as I liked it more) was a good movie. Other reviews gets into the specific so I’ll get into what I liked and didn’t like
Likes:
Of course with any Ghibli movie, this has amazing animation and the best animation in a ghibli movie so far.
...
Music as well I liked this 2nd to From up on Poppy Hill
I liked the concept of the story as well
Tha bad: pacing was quite slow in my opinion that’s the only negative I have about this
I hope Goro or other ghibli directors can make other great movies, but it is an end of an era.
This movie was For Goro as per Hayao’s request and I think it did a fascinating job
I watched it Dub and yep all the famous starts like Bale and such made the dub which was amazing
All in all great movie!
4/5
Thanks!

I went into this anime with high hopes.
This is the first ever anime I went with high hopes as I always, ALWAYS keep zero expectations.
The difference this time is not because of its score, rank, or who directed it. It is because of Rakugo. Believe it or not, I knew Rakugo through this Canadian guy who has done English rakugo and he killed it!
So I went into this with somewhat expectations, and I am happy to say it absolutely delivered!!
First off, Rakugo is not a topic that people can make many episodes on. For most, it is quite boring and depending on the Rakugo
...
story even for me it is a little boring.
I found the essence of this to be super similar to Your Lie in April, in that Arima quit the Piano and so did the older apprentice in this as well. And the other apprentice was trying to reignite the flame within the older apprentice. Just like Kaori was trying to reignite the flame within Arima.
The Negatives:
Only one negative, it was a little confusing in that they jumped from the "present" to the past once or twice and it took a little while to adjust, and towards the end when they jumped to the present it took like 5 minutes to figure that out haha.
Oh and this might be small, but not the biggest fan with the OP. It was not that good in my honest opinion. It might be small, but I do this with every single anime so yeah.
The Positives:
First and foremost, the story. Beautiful yet somewhat sorrowful story as well. It was insane how the older apprentice predicted he might end up as his first master it was eery.
The animation was surprisingly high quality I was quite surprised. Good Animation.
Finally, there was some goooood Rakugo in there, the story selections were really spot-on. The lrakugo story performed by the older apprentice, the one about the purse, it was so good. All the Rakugo stories in here were performed with such emotions I could hear it in the VA's voice. It shocked me how good it was, as Rakugo also relies on facial expression and I did not think they could make up for it but I would sya it is about 70% as good as IRL rakugo, although the comedic rakugo was not as good as comedic rakugo IRL.
The background music was good as well.
All in all, solid anime!
I took a point off for the OP and another point off because although it was amazing, I feel like the story was a little too slow, which most like (I am a SoL lover) but in this case it was way too slow.
Thanks!

*NO SPOILERS*
Monster was an insane anime. It was so good I could not bring myself to finish it, thus me literally starting it in March and finished it in December.
First off, props to Naoki Urusawa for such an amazing story. I know the manga is insanely popular and such, but man even in anime form it is literally amazing. Kenzo Tenma is emphasized so much in the anime, the emotions behind Johann and Anna, and much more things that other animes just cannot capture.
In Monster you feel so many emotions, you start out feeling hatred against Johann but slowly you just empathize with him
...
(Of course not to the point where he is a good guy, but more like less of a bad guy). YOu also insanely empathize with Anna as well as she just goes through a lot of pain.
Monster is about this amazing neurosurgeon named Kenzo Tenma who saves this young boy names Johann. From before, a monster has awoken inside of Johann. From then on Tenma spent 60 episodes chasing Johann and on the run from the police since Tenma is accused of murders.
We also get introduced to side characters such as -
Lungue from the BKA: Investigated Tenma as he first thought he was the suspect. Went from hating him to empathizing with him.
Grimmer the smiling guy with the duffel bag: Grimmer is such a nice guy and is always nice to Tenma.
Eva Heinemann: The ex-fiance of Tenma whom split up with him. She became an insane alcoholic and was desperate to be with Tenma again
Dieter: A small child who was facing adverse conditions and Tenma basically swoooped him up and now is much happier.
Basically with all these characters and many more (The Baby, etc) the story became very interesting.
We also learn each and every persons backstory and with me knowing the backstory of these people empathizing or hating them became much easier.
You know the feeling when an anime doesnt give as much information for you?
Well Monster gives you almost ALL the information. Basically spoonfeeds it to you. Even if there is a mystery element, you basically know what happens.
Johann could be an entire essay on its own to be honest. He is such an interesting character and for the sake of spoilers I will not delve into it but it amazing story writing.
The Animation: This is 4:3 late 90's animation so do not expect too much. Still, for the late 90's it was amazing animation. To this day it has a lot of details. The only thing that ages it was the somewhat use of CGI but even then it was limited and not noticed *too* much.
What I expected to be CGI was the cars, but they were not CGI. What I did not expect to be CGI were a few doors which was CGI which is quite hilarious.
All in all animation was good.
FInally, Music: The OP is legendary I am going to be honest. The BGM was also understated yet always lifted the tension of scenes.
Consensus: Monster is a legendary anime and will forever be talked about. Literally one of, if not the best story ever told in anime. If this had modern animation and fewer episodes since a few moments were not as important, then I would have zero problems giving it a 10/10
But other than that this was an amazing anime
9/10
Thanks!

Kono Oto Tomare was a magical anime. There are only half a dozen music-focused animes that I can think of:
Bocchi the Rock
Your Lie in April
Hibike! Euphonium
K-On
Belle
Bang! Dream.
These are the ones I can think of. But Kono Oto Tomare is the ONLY anime that not only focused 100% of its energy on the actual music but also was very good at it. Bocchi the Rock was hilarious but not as music-focused. YLIA was depressing but again not as music-focused as Kono Oto. I know YLIA had some AMAZING Piano music selection, but not as focused on the music as Koto. K-On! was a cute Moe anime
...
that had amazing moments but then again that was a Slice of Life with not as much focus on music. Belle was a dramatic movie but did not as much focus on music as it did not just save the world. Finally, Hibike Euphonium did have a music focus but in my opinion (cancel me) it was not that enjoyable and frankly was quite boring.
This one though, this one had a ton of emotional baggage. The sheer backstories of these people are amazing. From the delinquents to the main lady, they were all amazing!
The teacher had an amazing backstory, hell the rivals EACH had their own amazing backstories. It was all scripted PERFECTLY with little-to-no time wasted, it was truly magnificent.
The animation is beautiful. Many times I see animes not actually sync the music played to the animated note played. This one however did. The character designs are nice, and everything from the backgrounds to the Koto's string shining when played were beautifully and meticulously animated.
The Music: Need I say anything else. Nope. The final performance was some of the best music in anime. Not the best sounding per say, but the most emotional baggage in ANY music piece. Akin to the final YLIA piano performance when Arima played his heart out.
The Plot: Amazing. The Koto club at their high school wanted to go to nationals so they all practiced their hearts out. In that time they were improving a ton! I liked this season since it had this focus unlike the first one where the plot moved at a snails pace.
The Bad; WHERE IS MY SEASON 3. Also while this is amazing, I feel like there couldve been a little more plot in the season.
Final Score: 8/10
Thanks!

I am Sakamoto is a humour-based anime.
This was an interesting one for sure. For one, when I started the show, I was very very intrigued to say the least due to the fact that usually you would get an MC who is not perfect but would have character development.
Here, it is the opposite, you get an MC that is perfect from the get-go and you get almost no character development. This is one of the reasons It led to its downfall but I will get into detail on that later on.
The good:
The Humour. The humour is very subjective, but for the most part I
...
liked it. It had a very natural feeling even though everything about the MC was unnatural at best. But other than him, you would feel like there is that sort of guy in every class and many of us would witness that when went to school. The actual humour is nice with some jokes hitting hard. It was not consistent humour like Nichijou or Saiki K, but it was nice nevertheless.
The Music: OP and ED was nice. The background music as well. All evidence of a higher-quality anime.
The Animation: Also nice. With Sakamoto's insane movements, the scenes are all animated nicely. Similar animation to Saiki K I would say.
The Supporting Characters. The supporting characters, mostly the guys I'll be honest, were good. Almost ALL the supporting characters had real character development and went on to have nice stories of their own. It is very refreshing as most animes do anything but notice supporting-characters actual plots and stories. Here, the supporting characters had more screen-time and character development than Sakamoto himself which is interesting, but good for the side characters! Especially last episode, it was good.
The Bad:
Sakamoto was so annoying at times it was insane! Half the time I liked him, half the time he was so annoying. I know we might have perfect people, but even perfect people here would have imperfections, or something that they would like. Saiki K for example, went crazy for pudding and even he had 'friends' of his own which sometimes he enjoyed hanging out with.
Here? He seems like he is unreal. He almost never thinks he is enjoying himself interacting with people and he has an ego thinking that he is benefitting other people with his own interactions it is beyond deranged mental psychopathic behaviour and is frankly quite appalling.
He also has ZERO character development. Nothing. Nothing changed with him. From the moment he set foot in that classroom to the end, NOTHING about him changed it is insane.
Finally, the last episode you were supposed to 'dislike' Acchan, yet I sympathize him once he stopped being a delinquent. I mean he was trying to hang out with Sakamoto and teach him a few things. Like man Sakamoto can be humble at least once right? For the benefit of people around him?
Instead he was just being a pretentious douche and being himself like always. He is akin to a living AI and is actually not a real person. I would not be surprised if he was just programming himself everyday.
Consensus:
All in all, it was an okay series. Forgetting the Sakamoto mishaps, half the episodes were incredibly boring and the other half was surprisingly entertaining. You NEVER know what you will get.
Pick your poison here, and enjoy the show if you can endure the other half that is frankly awful.
Final Score: 5/10
Thanks!
