This is Captain David welcoming you aboard the S.S. PolyDunami. Formerly used as a personal epithet, I found that PolyDunami serves a better purpose as the name of a platform or possibly a ship. And so, it's this ship which has sailed through the vast ocean of anime and manga for the better part of two decades. It's gladdening indeed to make your acquaintance.
I had my first unwitting experience of these anime waters when I was a young boy of 5. Sailor Moon was first making her waves through Canada and, against my mother's command, my sister and I ventured to watch anyway. Since then, other shows had started making their way here. Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Digimon, Monster Rancher, and Yu-Gi-Oh! had come around and I was avidly watching all these shows of which I was quite entertained.
When adolescence started, these shows were soon forgotten. For one, I was discouraged when I found out that all the anime I had been watching were censored sometimes severely when they'd been dubbed into English. But when I was around 16 or 17, I discovered a little website called YouTube. This is when I would consider getting back into the world of anime, and where else to start but from the beginning?
Since my journey began with Sailor Moon, it was fitting that it should resume with her. But this time, since I wanted to fully complete the show, I had to go with the original Japanese language and rely on English subtitles which turned out to be available on YouTube at the time. I'd rely on YouTube, Veoh, and other sources to complete my first anime.
From there, I had started lots of other anime and manga, some which I did complete but others I either couldn't finish or otherwise lost interest. It was an on again, off again sort of journey until I created this account here on MyAnimeList. I searched through the database and added all the anime and manga I had seen. From there, I began the daunting task of adding every title that was connected to or referenced by the shows I watched to my agenda. Every added title would bring another set of connections and references. My combined total of entries has now almost reached nine thousand.
Now, my goal is to complete as much of this formidable list as possible. I'd intended to go by broadcast and publication order, but that led to watching several low-rated entries in a row at times. Since this is meant to be an enjoyable pastime, I had to switch things up, and so all those shows I had completed or dropped before I came to MAL were restarted.
Now, I alternate between my highest scored entry and a cycle which consists of the following three items:
- The earliest publish date in my planning list
- A planned entry which interests me
- The first eight entries I've started which are not completed
As for the highest scored entry, I stick with it if the rating remains the same or goes up; should my score decrease, I will then alternate to the above list.
Thanks for stopping by. This is Captain David, and S.S. PolyDunami is on course for a vast, long journey yet to come. We'll see you later.
