I think you're being too generous on the first SAO arc, it was equally a mess; action for like the first two eps, then confused to a romance/SoL/harem?? The synopsis was very misleading so the show never got to the main point while the writers tried to cram every genre under the sun and out came this disastrous monstrosity that is SAO.
