I should say right now that Love Hina vol. 1 was the first manga I ever purchased. So, even after my initial disapointment with it, I found myself rereading it several times out of sheer lack of any other options. Initially, I was to busy pitying the all too pitiable protagonist, Keitaro, as he was relentlessly tortured by the harem of women he'd found himself plopped into.

My gudging view of the series persisted until the third volume (once I start a story, I find it hard to leave it hanging), where I feel Love Hina really hits its stride. For the next 11 volumes, ...

On the surface, there's not much to get about Desert Punk. The potential for fanservice and action is apparent from the get-go. What might not be as evident is the depth of the characters: in particular that of Punk's sidekick, Kosuna. She proves the perfect foil to both Punk and Junko (the show's primary source of /e/). Another character perk is the show's superb english dub and localization, which I'd actually recommend over the origional Japanese audio. The strengths and weaknesses of Furi Kuri can be neatly summed up in its production staff. On the one hand you have Production IG, so you know you'll get some intensly colorful and comical action and characters (Dead Leaves, RE:Cutey Honey). The action isn't quite as intense as it is in these later efforts, though it's still plenty exciting, and thus it is easier to follow and rarely gets overcrowded. Aestetically, FLCL is just about the perfect cartoon.

Then you've got Gainax, and with it an overwrought story of teenage angst and coming-of-age. Granted, it's not nearly as convoluted as Eva (thank goodness), and the 6 ...
