Look, I'm a BIG Pokemon fan, the games mostly, but I like anime too. However, when it comes to manga of the series, it was not something I liked very much. Obviously it is not my favorite type of manga, so I am suspicious to speak, but, with regard to what I thought of the work, I can say that: it does what it has to do, but it does not do what I would like it to did.
Story: 7
Pokemon has never had a reputation for worrying too much about creating a grand story or anything this, although fans love to create theories and fics
...
around it. The manga follows (much more or less) the core of Red and Blue (or Green), but this is shown in a very comic and expressive way; which I don't like much of this choice, although I love the first generation.
Even so, I scored 7 because, in what the manga proposes, he manages to pass his idea very well. I prefer the story of Adventures, for example, but still, it does well in what it proposes.
Art: 3
Polygonal designs, centered eyes, expressive expressions ... it is not at all something that I like. There are those who must like this, but not me.
Besides the character design, the polluted scenarios and the energetic dialogues are very uncomfortable, and the style that the story is being told through the paintings does not make me want to continue.
Character: 4
Red is EXTREMELY BORING, Pikachu is NO FUN and Chansey is SO TEDIOUS. There is no way you can like the characters, unless you are at most 8 years old and do not know whether a character is interesting or not.
I know that the manga is aimed at exactly that audience (kids) and that I may seem to be talking with hate, but it's the truth, the characters are developed in a terrible way. The author was too unhappy giving such stupid personalities to each of them.
Enjoyment: 6
Although, among all the other topics, this is the one that bothers me the most, I gave it a reasonably good grade, since the pleasure of reading the manga is simply nil, it's bad, so bad, you don't have will to read - except for one fact:
IT'S POKEMON
Pokemon is such an inspiring and wonderful franchise that I couldn't give it a 2 on that topic, because for me Pokemon was very important in building so much from my childhood to this day.
The manga is YES bad, the story is YES boring, the development is YES poor and you are left with NO desire to read, but you keep reading because it is POKEMON and keep saying "YES, YES, YES, YES!" to every chapter.
As much as the manga, the anime, the games and the franchise itself may disappoint me, I will continue to love Pokemon because it is fantastic.
