Ashita no Joe and Buraiden Gai focus on troubled young men who are orphans and are trying to live independently. Joe and Gai are both tough and have similar outlooks on life, which also leads to them getting arrested and ending up in juvenile prisons. So overall, Buraiden Gai shares similar themes and vibe with the early part of Ashita no Joe.

Both follow teenagers who get framed for murder, and then get placed in brutal prison settings. While Deadman Wonderland is clearly more influenced by battle shounen (and has way more gore), Buraiden Gai is more psychological (with more mental brutality). Both also feature desperate prison escape attempts.

Both stories have rather deep and meaningful insights into life and society and extravagant situations the characters go through. Also another manga by Fukumoto which isn't about gambling.
