The premise of both titles revolve around a team consisting of a deity and a candidate who combat other deity/human teams. However, the motive for fighting differ between the two. In Popcorn Avatar, it is related to the world's destruction/protection. In GAN KON, it is to increase the deity's real estate, as well as grant the candidate his or her most desired wish.

Similarities include: a god/goddess who appoints the protagonist as his/her candidate; fights between deities involving candidates; the promise of a wish to be granted by the deity if the candidate wins.

Both have a boy making a contract to fight for the heroine. Gan-kon has the goddess granting a boys wish in in doing so makes the boy fight for her. Ware ha Kenou has the king, the heroine, make a contract with the boy, the sword and he fights for her. They both have to do with territory where the characters fight in battles and gain territory by winning.

In both titles, a male protagonist, in the hopes of finding love, makes a prayer at a shrine. His prayer is answered, much to his surprise, by a female deity who ends up being his romantic interest. Although GAN KON is also typified by action, both titles are fundamentally light-hearted romantic comedies.
