VERY VERY SIMILAR. A playboy falls in love for the first time and doesn't know what to do. A strong female lead. Difference - length. Kirai is much longer, but despite being short Hatsujou Material is also worth reading. 

In both mangas the girl is expressionless and focused in her studies while the guy is pursuing her. Although, tonari no kaibutsu-kun is better because the characters are more developed. 

It is not the plot that is similar, but rather the main female lead. In case you like strong, decisive and level-headed girls, both series should bring you lots of enjoyment. 

they both are love story done right. not over-the-top mushy or lovely-dovly they are both mature storys about love and the hardships that come with love. if you are like me and hate most shouji-ai type of manga and anime than this two may just open you up to love storys. they did for me and i'm a manly man.
