Background

Translated for the first time outside Japan, Legends of Judo (Jukyoden in Japanese) is one of the most important titles of the 1970s gekiga movement, so famous that it spawned an entire comic saga spanning more than nine thousand pages. Jukyoden, Showa Jukyoden, Gendai Jukyoden, Otoko Jukyoden, Nihon Jukyoden, and Shin Jukyoden.
Through the stories of various judoka, Baron Yoshimoto narrates the history of Japan from the Meiji period to the 1970s. Each saga is dedicated to a member of the same family, whose personal struggles intertwine with the course of history.
