Both are early 1900s period pieces that share themes of rape, political intrigue (though this is much more of a focus in Yuuustu na As), and hatred of family. These are dark, twisted, mature, not really happy stories. But both kept me engaged and turning the pages even if I didn't feel real great while doing so.

Both are BL, feature age gap romance+slowburn and made by the same author.

Set in the Taishō era. Protagonists struggle with social hierarchy and expectations placed on them by their families.

Master/servant relationships where the power balance between the two is constantly in flux. The master is young and tries to earn (or force) the respect of the steward, and the steward is cold and mostly concerned with preserving the household status. Two well-written BL manga with gorgeous art.

Both have two of the smartest, most analytical ukes ever seen in yaoi. They are also drop-dead-gorgeous but that's just a bonus. Yuuutsuna Asa is not as lighthearted as Merry Checker though, it's deep and dark and it just pays with your heart strings leaving you craving for more.
