Like the green pheasant is considered the national bird of Japan, or Mt. Fuji the national mountain, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_symbols_of_Japan) one could argue that the Super Cub is Japan's national motorcycle. Like the cherry blossom trees that Japan sends to other nations as symbols of good will, the Super Cub has brought a certain Japanese joie de vivre to every nation where it has been exported.
Reiko was Koguma's co-star in Super Cub. Rei was the second of the three lead characters who rode Cubs not just for transportation, but for the independence and access to the adult world the little motorcycles represented. Super Cub, both light novel

and manga, are listed as unfinished and still publishing. Now Rei gets her own star-turn, and fans of Super Cub get more of the story of the beautiful, intelligent, athletic Rei, from her upbringing in a wealthy and politically connected family, to her early childhood fascination with racing and speed.
For Super Cub Rei, it must be noted that there is a new author and artist, apparently doing both art and story. He is also the mangaka behind Shuumatsu Touring (Touring after the Apocalypse, aka Terminal Touring) about two girls touring an end-of-the-world Japan on a big touring bike. Our new mangaka's main qualification appears to be his three prior mangas about girls and motorcycles. I'm hoping he will bring his passion for motorcycles to Rei's story, and leave behind the ecchi work he has done in the past. So far, I give it 8 out of 10, primarily because it has been a decent addition to the Super Cub universe.
The Cub is famous, like the VW Beetle, for being easy to maintain, repair, or modify. Early in her adolescence, Rei discovers that tinkering and modifying her own Cub is more fun than dreaming of buying that fast superbike. She is the epitome of the old saying that it is more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow...
If you have found this manga, you are probably already a fan of Super Cub. Ride along with me while we follow Rei on her adventures. Remember, you can go anywhere, because you have a Cub! And if you don't have your own yet, Rei will give you a ride on the back of her Cub. Just wear your helmet and hold on tight! And like Koguma, we'll take the long way home!
