(Rin is a sequel to the previous Sugar)
Rin is the best manga that has abandoned all orthodox methods.
Orthodox methods?
Readers can feel emotionally invested in the main character.
The villain does terrible things, and the reader is disgusted by the villain.
The hero defeats the villain and the reader gets catharsis.
If there are 100 interesting comics, 99 will take this approach.
...
Conversely, Rin actively adopts a method that makes readers not want to read the manga (i.e., makes them want to tear it up and throw it away).
He is an inferiority complex nerd who posts on a Web message board.
The protagonist is a boxer with prodigious talent but no social skills. If he were a scholar, one might call him an antisocial personality.
A hero who thoroughly beats up a hero who is an admired hero to the good mob.
The hero who makes fun of his opponent (a reformed ex-mafia boxer) who has a common inspirational story background.
The hero and the heroine, who are childhood friends, truly love the hero. But she shuns the hero and goes out with a man who is not the hero and has sex with him. Moreover, the descriptions are specific and realistic.
On top of that, the pictures are not beautiful and there is zero kawaii. Or minus.
Okay, let me explain why I love this manga.
The main character is more sensitive than anyone else in the manga, but he never shows it to anyone. (Readers who are too accustomed to easy-to-understand portrayals of comical characters may not notice this.)
The protagonist makes an extraordinary effort, but there is no manga description to explain it clearly to the reader. (He routinely runs the distance of a full marathon, but he is not described as if he is "making an effort.)
The protagonist has aesthetics, beliefs, and kindness. But characters other than the protagonist are not aware of it from the beginning to the end. (They are only scattered in a few lines in small panels.)
I'm not going to tell everyone they should read it. Because most geeks are normal, orthodox geeks.
But I really like this manga. I really, really like it.
There is an absolute beauty in it that is not depicted in other manga.
