Synopsis

An ordinary teenager is transported to a fantasy world, accidentally gets on the bad side of the gods, and is dumped in the bottom of the world's deepest dungeon with no skills or magic. Ouch! Once there, he meets a mysterious girl...who happens to be undead. But despite her general dislike of humans, she decides to help him out. Can the two of them make it back to the surface? They might just be a more powerful combo than anyone was expecting!

The series has been published in English as Disciple of the Lich: Or How I Was Cursed By the Gods and Dropped into the Abyss by Seven Seas Entertainment under its Airship imprint since October 12, 2021.

Generic character. Standard tropes. But I nonetheless really enjoy this light novel. It doesn't take a lot to please me, but I can also recognize when I like something despite its flaws. This might very well be the case.

But I'll start with the characters.

The main character is your run-of-the-mill average Japanese teenager; the story is (essentially) a harem; the main character is overpowered.
But I really enjoy this, so much so that I gave it an 8/10.
Despite the main character being generic, I kept reading--and I think it's because the novels go really in-depth into his thought processes, his reactions, his decisions, etc.. I felt ...

Honestly, I thought this light novel would contain a little more substance. But, all things considered, it was disappointing. At this point in time, I’ve read the first book and the start of the second, and I’ve seen nothing indicating it getting better.
It starts off being your regular isekai: an average Japanese guy with no significance is transported to a fantasy world. The twist in this particular one is that the protagonist, Kanata, is thrown at the bottom of a ridiculously high-level dungeon, where he meets a lich girl, Lunaère, and her pet mimic (or something like that). The dynamic between these characters ... works well, making for interesting interactions and subtleties. At this point, the story peeks. Lunaère takes Kanata in and trains her, thus beginning a training arc.
After this training arc, the main character heads to the surface, and this is where everything falls apart. The story turns into the worst possible generic isekai OP protagonist type of story. Fight scenes come and go like the wind with no (or little) explanation or set-up and foreshadowing. The protagonist just beats up every ‘evil guy’ effortlessly as a result of his training in the beginning. Not only that, but everyone he fights is just evil for the sake of being evil with no explanation (or with an extremely lousy explanation).
Honestly, Lunaère, the lich, is the best part of this book. She actually has a backstory and depth to her, unlike the main character. Her mysterious nature interests the reader, and sprinkle in some cute moments, you get an excellent character.
The same cannot be said about the protagonist, who is just as generic as can possibly be. No backstory, no personality, and no quirks. Even the pet mimic Lunaère keeps is more interesting. He faces no hardship, he just gets OP. There is just nothing interesting about him.
The protagonist also meets a healer girl on the surface, but she is, unfortunately, also plagued by genericness, although, it’s not as bad as the protagonist. If you think about the healer girl archetype, she is exactly that. She has a bit of a backstory which is tied together with her being discriminated against because she is a half-elf, and of course, the protagonist is a ‘good guy’ for not caring and helping her (yet another awful isekai trope contributing no depth to the story and characters).
Lastly (slightly bigger spoiler), the book is also shaping up to be a light harem story where every new character is a girl, and by some divine intervention, they fall in love with the protagonist. Although love can be without reason, I really don’t see why these girls should fall in love with the main character. If anything, the girls just seem lonely, and the protagonist just unknowingly takes advantage of that. Of course, the protagonist is completely unaware of their feelings.
The art is quite beautiful, especially the coloured and cover ones. Though, the uncoloured ones within the book can be simple and bland, lacking background and proper shading.
All in all, the story starts of promising, but quickly falls apart, turning into yet another horrible and generic isekai with a fickle plot with a lack of set-up and proper foreshadowing. Every character, with the exception of the lich, Lunaère, is shallow and uninteresting, especially the main character. Would I recommend this? Depends on what you like, but probably not.

Light spoilers. Mind you I have read about 2 volumes before dropping it. (Originally on MAL, updated/extended on Anilist)

I went into this book not really expecting much. Most isekai/reincarnation stories haven't got the best record of having the strongest plot and worlds, this isn't an exception. This book is no different from any other terrible isekai story, it is a set in a fantasy world, with magic and dangerous monsters roaming about.

Flat, unoriginal world/plot.

This is basically what most people consider a "traditional fantasy world" with little to nothing unique. You have your "really dangerous dungeon" thing. I don't like this format. Many stories that use ... this format tend to fall flat in terms of the world building, they don't expand on: history, background - whatever. Not every isekai has this sort of issue, nor needs to world build that much. But this one is an issue. There's barely any instances off the world being described in some way. No countries, kingdoms, cities?? None come to mind.
Admittedly, I haven't read this light novel in a couple of months. But at least with other isekai, like Mushoku Tensei, I remember a majority of cities and countries... (and it's been well over a year) Well, whatever. There are a little "place names" It is just, "there's a big scary dungeon" or "there's a forest full of bandits" and "there is this really bad evil person, I am going to kill them." So in terms of world building/plot and developing it, I'll say it isn't good.

In terms of the start, it doesn't really stand out. It follows the premise of the main character somehow angers the gods and punishes them to be sent to the lowest point in the most dangerous dungeon. Why? Why this idea for a start? It just seems so generic. If you told me this opening I would have just laughed, that or name ten books with equally generic openings. Not to mention after about a couple of months time skip, the main character is suddenly 1000x stronger than he was going in. He's at a point where no one matches him, other than the lich girl. We see little to no development or growth in skill. Just doing some training with a girl that "hates" humans. Which leads too my second issue.
The characters are just such a bore.

Every character is 2 dimensional.

You've got this lich girl who hates humans - oh! But as it turns out - she doesn't! Fine, whatever. Although - the gods doesn't know? From my understanding they are omniscient? But maybe the gods in this world can't see everything - it's a nitpick from me anyway. My main issue is that she falls in love with him. It wouldn't be that bad if we actually got some half-decent interactions, but no. All the interactions we get between them is either her stalking him and being jealous (wow so unique) or her just training the guy in the dungeon. Maybe something happened off-screen, or maybe...

Maybe this lich girl is so excluded from society of other beings, such as humans and fellow liches, that when she ends up meeting this guy for the first time she ends up falling in love. She confuses friendship and just friendly conversation with love. Haha, just kidding. Also, why does she hate humans? Is it ever explained in the first two novels? No. Maybe it is done later, which is actually a fairly good idea. It builds mystery, although, if you wait too long, it can just seem like you forgot to mention it.

As the story progresses and the protagonist finally leaves the dungeon it follows a simple format; >There is someone bad who's doing harm >Kills them >Reward of some sort >Repeat. There is no moral dilemma/moment of clarity killing people. Just "oh wow he was bad i did good". No one, on this planet earth, could kill someone without any sort of feeling. Other then literally sociopaths or people who've grown accustomed to it. (Like police or something, they would probably still feel something).
The main protagonist shows no issues, no flaws, seemingly no ambitions. He goes around, saving everyone. He has no thoughts about his previews world, family, regrets - none. This is just... ugh really bad.
Conclusion

I feel like only certain type of people will enjoy this, the type if people that enjoy a nice, light-hearted power fantasy were the main character seemingly has no flaws or weaknesses.
I hate power fantasies: a person who can tackle every problem with their might. I don't mind strong protagonists, they are fine and I like a couple of them... I don't think I could ever enjoy this to the point I continue reading it.
