Synopsis

Todoroki, an underboss of the underground syndicate "Tsuchigumo", and Arigaya, a detective of the 4th police division, are constantly at each others throats. But although the two are on opposite sides of the law, they're both actually madly in love with one another! Can love even flourish between a Yakuza and a Cop? Yakuza to Metsuki no Warui Onna Keiji no Hanashi is a hilarious romcom between two unsuspecting prisoners of love as they navigate their way through the stakeouts and sting operations of a love you would've least expected!

Yakuza to Metsuki no Warui Onna Keiji no Hanashi is a web manga released on the author's Twitter and pixiv accounts since July 5, 2019, and published in print by Kadokawa since May 14, 2021. The series has been published as doujinshi since November 24, 2019, when the first volume was released at COMITIA 130.

The doujinshi series has been published digitally in English as Arrested Love by Irodori Comics since July 31, 2020.

This is my first review, and I know it won’t necessarily be that great, but considering this series is yet to have any reviews, I thought I’d try one out. As of the time that I have written this review, only 8 chapters have been translated. This is a gag manga that is by no means unique but nevertheless still enjoyable.

Story: 7
The story is a pretty generic forbidden love one, where the 2 mcs are forced to put up a facade whenever they are around each other in public. And ofcourse like usual, one keeps fking up and they are put into many sticky ... situations. Although it’s a very basic and overused plot, unlike most romcom gag mangas, this already has a lot of relationship development inside the first 8 chapters which is a big positive.

Art: 8
The 2 main characters are very well drawn out and at first I thought the art was very good, but was then very confused to see that no effort was put into a fair few panels. Every few pages, a panel pops up that literally uses stick figures. The lack of detail is in complete contrast with the art style predominantly used and is a major letdown.

Characters: 7
On the whole, the characters are clichéd, the overly serious policewoman and the love-struck yakuza leader. As expected, with the short chapter sizes, there is also no room for any character development, however that could changed in the upcoming chapters. Despite the character tropes, their personalities suit the lighthearted romcom very well and create a nice mood. As of yet, there has been no development on any of the side characters most of which are completely irrelevant but that is subject to change.

Enjoyment: 8
I must say that although it was a very generic storyline, it was also very refreshing and a nice short read. The characters, although polar opposites seem to suit each other quite well with their strict personalities and the speed of relationship development is such that you get lots of action unlike most of the romcoms that are extremely frustrating for the readers. Another reason why it’s enjoyable is because it doesn’t beat around the bush, with both characters being straightforward and conveying their feelings rather easily.

Overall: 7
Since there have only been 8 chapters, it would be quite hard for this to achieve a high rating and I believe so far it’s done very well. It’s by no means a groundbreaker, but a very solid romcom with lots of potential. It’s a quick read that’s worth your time, so I would definitely recommend it. Even if you find it’s not to your taste, it’s quite short so not much of your time would be wasted.

I wrote a small review for the first volume of this doujin.

This light-hearted doujin reminds me of manga like Sakamoto Days and Way of the Househusband. You get the gritty like and times of crime lords and still get the quirky love stories on the side. I’m sure stories like these are not far and few in between, but they are always gems when you find good ones.

The best part of the story is the internal dialogue of both characters that show just how far gone both of them are in love with each other but just don’t have the courage or confidence to ...

It's a generic manga that is very repetitive, even in comparison to most shows. This one repeats itself, more so in their dialogues within our two main characters. It starts off a bit cute, but you will not see much improvement, and feels like it goes on to the point of annoyance.
