‘A dark fantasy that will rattle your brain!’ Okay, I accept the challenge!
In a nutshell
Racism, violence and inequality are a part of human nature. Even if you think ‘I am different,’ you will still think that you are somehow superior, better and different. Prejudice is a part of you and you will never escape it; it is hard-wired into your brain.
The story of the manga focuses on a group of people, who are destined to defeat the demon lord. The brave ones that will assist the hero and will bring down the demon. Some of them are close childhood friends, some of them
have just met, but there is one thing that unites them and it is their destiny to rid the world of the demon lord. Flum Apricot is a part of the group. Unfortunately, due to the nature of her power, all of the stats she has equal one. After some time, her party starts to see her as an errand girl, then as a dead weight and then… you will see. Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! tells the story of the two slaves, who, too, deserve the right to live their lives however they want.
Character wise, the manga focuses on the master-slave relations. Why am I a slave? Why are some people slaves, and others masters? No matter how ignorant masters keep their slaves, it is impossible to beat it into them that they are made to be slaves. The two girls, ex slaves, stripped of their rights, now can decide for themselves how to live their lives. And Milkit and Flum Apricot have a huge story to tell the reader; they receive excellent character development, which makes character interactions and the process of reading that enjoyable.
I do not know about you, but I am sick and tired of all these ‘an overpowered hero saves the world with little to no effort, gets a harem of cute girls, as well as makes the demon lord a part of the harem’ kind of stories. Boring! They have little to no story, as well as boring characters that are just so obvious that you do not need to be a genius to predict what they are up to. The moment I saw that the manga claims to be a dark fantasy that any reader will remember for a long time, I saw it as a challenge. Truth be told, I did not know about shoujo ai back then. And so, I gave it a try. All I can say is that I got what I wanted: the story that is actually dark and gruesome (there are many scenes that are very distressing to see), interesting characters and character interactions that make you want find out more about the characters and beautiful art. Instead of being a yuri bait, the manga actually tries to win your attention with its dark and intriguing story and shoujo ai here is not the main focus of the story. With that being said, I got what I wanted. And I am glad.
All in all, it is getting more and more difficult to find something that I can call unique. This manga is exactly that unique gem that you will need to look for some while to find, but it is worth it. While the manga is amazing, the novel does things even better. So my advice to everyone is to both read the manga and the novel and to hope to see the anime adaptation one day.
