After the brief break I was on , I was feeling lethargic about picking up a manga, or as a matter of fact, anything related to anime in general. But this may have been the kickstart to rekindle that old flame.
The manhwa as an overall has been a dark, bleak but surprisingly compelling of a story to read. It had its legs in various different genres, a bit of mystery here, romance there, add in a bit off a crime-thriller with time travel, and while it didn't capture the greatness of any of the mentioned genres, it did enough of an effort to make it
...
an interesting page turner, and an extremely great one at that.
Right off the bat, we are demanded to start off that rusty old brain into guessing what is happening. And as we move forward we are given more lollipops to hold onto. Another fact is that I remembered nearly every character which was introduced which is fairly difficult for me, but maybe it is helped by the fact that it was 60 chapters long and any side character which was no use of the story were not introduced at all or had not much of a mention. Also maybe that the characters were interesting to follow and were memorable to an extent (?).
I always felt like that manhwas had always has the edge for better characters in a school setting compared to a manga. But this manhwa seemed to fumble the bag a bit here, since none of the characters feel like actual school students but rather college sophomores. More so strengthened by the fact that the themes are much more mature compared to as you would expect from a school themed media. It is not much of a blunder, but it does feel a bit funny at times. But the character personality and interactions between them felt realistic to an extent, so I can ignore such a small thing.
I thought that the art was pretty mediocre when I first read it. But I came to understand the difference in the artistic approach and not everything is fast, action-paced fighting sequence with badass art shoved right up to our eyes. Some things are different and suit different things.
I think the mystery was good at most. It was not bad, just done good enough to work well. The romantic aspect felt inactive in the beginning stages, but gained traction to redeem itself in the later stages. The weakest thread has to be the time travel, it did not go deep into all the time mechanics, but I don't think it needed to. It's just that the time travel thing felt bland at times. Not the events happening due to time travel but the time travel itself. The events were interesting to see, especially the indecisiveness of the female lead's love interests. It had me on edge the entire time. A bit tropey at times but I can get behind that. The ending may have felt a bit rushed, but a happy ending for some while some getting the short end of the stick. But hey where there is light there is darkness as well.
At last a good read which would leave you turning pages after pages, I mean I sure did. Starting reading from midnight and was up reading this till 3 A.M. After that I gave in to the sleep and completed it the next day.
Also I need a fucking Injung x Sihyun spin-off goddammit!!!
