![]() https://myanimelist.net/anime/59452/Katainaka_no_Ossan_Kensei_ni_Naru Synopsis Beryl Gardinant, a self-proclaimed "humble old man," is a sword instructor at his dojo in a rural, backwater village. In his younger years, he dreamed of glory as a master swordsman, but those days are long behind him. Out of the blue, he receives a visit from a famous former pupil who brings him world-shattering news—he's been appointed as a special instructor for the knights of the Liberion Order! With his life now turned upside down, Beryl travels to the capital and reunites with some of his former students: elite knights, an ace wizard, and even an adventurer who's attained the highest guild rank possible. But why do they all want his tutelage?! As far as he's concerned, they clearly don't need him anymore. Can Beryl live up to his new position? And will he ever get a moment's peace away from his adoring students?! (Source: J-Novel Club) Other Information Type: TV Episodes: Unknown Status: Currently Airing Aired: Apr 5, 2025 to ? There's no way this guy isn't based on Paul Greyrat, from the design, to the name. It's like "what if Paul Greyrat was a hermit instead of a womanizer" |

Episode 1 And here we have a show that feels like My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer, except that the old man, so to speak, is actually leaving the countryside himself to take on the missions and what not and not his daughter or apprentice. He tried to become a master swordsman, but that dream didn't work out so he spends his time training others hoping that they can fulfill his dream in his place. But now, he's about to be tasked with training a bunch of elite soldiers with a number of them being his former students. Beryl has quite a lot to offer here seeing that in that sparring match he hits the opponent on a whim when he tried to hold back. Intersting start to say the least, though I'm not sure how this show will hold up. |

The manga has some pretty good fights, I'm looking forward to how well they adapt them as the sparring match was better animated than most fights have been recently. |

That was pretty good. Not crazy about the way all the girls have been pining over him for a decade or however long it's been. I don't care about the age difference, it would just make a better story if we saw their feelings for him develop rather than have them come ready made in the very first episode. I appreciate that the blonde guy didn't end up being the stereotypical character that becomes the insanely jealous, one dimensional, bad guy we see way too often in anime. |

And I'm okay with that. I too was pleased with both the character of the MC and the blond class prodigy - I think I'll be following this. I switched it to Japanese with subtitles though - the dub just wasn't selling the "I'm too old for this shit" competent weariness that the Japanese VA is pulling off. |

Episode 2 Allucia's background is explained as she moved into the countryside with her family, and Beryl put her through some pretty tough training seeing that unlike in the capital, everybody needs to look out for themselves. As a result of her training, Allucia is easily the strongest knight in the unit, and it's no wonder why she's out to get Beryl to teach her comrades with his expertise. And then Beryl meets up with another former student in Ficelle, and then the magician Lucy who wants a sparring match with him. Beryl is getting quite popular here seeing that there's just no way his great talents are going to be confined to the boonies. |

Once again a show giving us a fine example of how not to handle backstory and flashbacks. What momentum the show built in the first episode came to a screeching halt faster than truck-kun. If they do the same thing with all his former students, and I suspect they will, this show will be a real yawn fest. They even had a totally unnecessary flashback to something that happened earlier in the same episode. runec said: I thought you'd be happy they introduced someone he could date that wasn't 20+ years younger than him. :pOf course the loli wizard is older than him. Episode 3 Lucy goes all-out, but Beryl avoids all the attacks and almost landed a hit. In the end, Lucy got what she came for in the challenge seeing that she's running out of mana. And then he gets challenged again, this time by another fellow swordsman in Surena. Her parents were killed by wild beasts and was thrown off the cliff to save her, and she was found by Beryl. He would take care of Surena and teach her swordsmanship before she was adopted by the Lysandra family and would go on to becoming an adventurer. Surena overwhelms Beryl with her speed, but Beryl exposed her weakness in her left hand. So now that Surena knows that Beryl taught her well but needs some more training that she has him accompanying a party into the cave, but they get attacked. Pretty nice to see that Beryl is showing that he hasn't lost his edge even at his age, but nevertheless there are a lot of people counting on him. |

Another overly long flashback.
@zkeleton The adventurer girl that had the flashback has just been given a spin-off manga. I think this episode showing her back story was partly set up as promotion for that because it follows a similar premise (her raising an orphan to be an adventurer). |

@Astral_Iguana I don't think that matters. We're going to get the bring-the-episode-to-a-screeching-halt flashbacks for all his former students and maybe one or two other characters too. The blonde girl in the skirt is going to be next and then the black haired girl, because we can't deviate from the order in which they were introduced. |

@zkeleton I just checked the manga, and this flashback is not there, there is a short different flashback about how she gets her adventurer nickname and her fighting style instead. They also extended the knight-captain's flashback earlier, but at least there was something in the source to expand upon instead of jamming in something that isn't in the manga. The main reason I think it might be marketing linked as the spinoff manga was released to coincide with the release of the anime, the owner of the publishing rights is Square Enix and they could easily have tied in something else into the production deal for the anime to help promote their new manga. |

Episode 4 Thanks to Surena's insights, they took down that gigantic monster there that caused all the other monsters to flee. Its foot provides Baldr, another former student but is actually older than Beryl, an opportunity to craft a very special weapon. And Curuni needs a new sword as her short swords are badly nicked up to the point where fixing it just isn't possible. So she gets a longer sword that's better suited to her style of fighting. And then Beryl comes across Mewi, a thief who is stealing for some no-good bandit gang. More characters are getting introduced here as Beryl did quite a great job teaching these ladies to the point that they all come calling back to him. |

How did he go from running away from the monster one second to stabbing it in the eye the next? Also loved how the griffon just stood there and watched what's her face come flying in from behind and didn't even try to get out of the way. If the short girl was such a great student how did she forget to use her hips? I thought it was pretty weird at first that he recognized the smith when he hadn't recognized any of his former female students. The explanation made sense though. |

I was kinda expecting him to finish the griffon with a flying kick to the broken swordblade, punching it through the brain and out the back of the head. Slightly bummed they didn't do that, but letting his student make the kill is more in-character, I guess. |

Episode 5 It turns out that Mewi was being deceived by Twilight into stealing under the false promise of him reviving her sister. But Lucy dispels all that as the three encounter Twilight and his gang where it turns out that he had been using accessories to make it look like resurrection is possible when it actually isn't. So the gang gets rounded up, but the church silences him as there's a bigger conspiracy going on. At least Beryl gets a talented magician here seeing that Mewi's skills are something that Lucy can really use now. |

Well that was better anyway. With a name like Mewi I expected a cat girl. It's hard to think of this as a genuine fantasy harem anime with no elves or cat girls. |

Episode 6 With Twilight being silenced, Beryl takes on the mastermind behind this operation who is necromancing these dead guys and presenting them to the public as a miracle. That would be the head priest of the church of Sphene, Reveos. But Beryl cuts down those dead guys without hesitation except for Mewi's sister, and he tries to have her pass on as mercifully as possible. So after all that Reveos is arrested and he gets a nice reward as Lucy gives him a house to stay in, all while he takes custody of Mewi as her legal guardian. Once again, a corrupted church made quite a mess there, but Beryl brought that guy to justice in a big way. |

One step closer to becoming everyone's dad. I'm honestly relieved the show isn't pushing any sort of romcom or harem tomfoolery. Dude is my age and they're like less than half my age. |

So we were supposed to be worried that our master swordsman, who'd just fought off a bunch of magically enhanced soldiers, was in danger from some very slow moving zombies? He wasted an awful lot of time in those two fights in the church when, for all he knew, the bishop was getting away. Why were two of the girls that specifically work for the state the ones who helped him when the whole reason they sent him was because anyone "official" was supposed to stay out of it? I figured the adventurer would help him, but I guess that would make too much sense. Good thing the bishop goes around wearing his formal finery while fleeing in the middle of the night so even people who have no idea what he looks like can easily identify him. |

Well I wasn't going to watch this after reading the title and only seeing a pic of the old man I was like ugh can't sit through another one of these. But it's actually pretty good, art is very good, kind of a weird harem but sooo much better than the other show about a guy and his former students 9_9 Also beats all the other "I don't realize how skilled I am compared to everyone else" by switching out stupidity for humility. Amazing what a difference that makes. Oh and the magic loli uses magic to look young, can't imagine that won't become a convenience when he finally realizes all the girls have the hots for him. If I have one complaint, his seiyuu sounds too old. It's especially bad in the flashbacks to when he was young. |

Youtube tells me that this show is actually showing some legitimate European swordsmenship and some of the basic lessons are legit. The production actually got help from a legit HEMA organization in Japan to make sure stuff looks realistic. |

@runec That's where the magic loli with her age reducing magic can help ;p The full grown woman who makes herself look like a loli has been around forever but at least give a reason why she does it. Like Washu in Tenchi Muyo hated adults because they split up her and her boyfriend, even that Demon Sword from this season his sister stayed a little girl because she wanted to keep being a literal little sister. So why is this super powerful magic girl making heraelf look like a ten year old instead of maybe a teenager like on Killing Slimes? |

Episode 7 Beryl finds out just how tough being a parent is, especially for somebody who is used to living such an unrefined lifestyle. But with Mewi's great potential as a mage that she gets enrolled at a prestigious academy with Lucy's recommendation. So the next question is to see if she wants to live in the dorms or commute from home. Beryl thinks she's better off in the dorms where it's clean and she gets free meals everyday, and even more so when Beryl goes chasing out mice that have taken residence in his home, but even so Mewi decides against moving into the dorms. She's going to have quite a tough time at school given where she came from and all, but it will be all worth it at the end if she does become the great wizard she has the potential to be in the end. |

Episode 8 Beryl has a huge new job coming up from Allucia and he has to buy some new clothes seeing that it's a job involving some really important people. As Beryl has never had the need to dress up that it's not exactly something Beryl was looking for, but it's a job only he's capable of doing. While Allucia wants something flashy, Beryl opts for something much more modest and to his liking. After that, Allucia challenges Beryl to a sparring match, and while Allucia's strikes are really fast, Beryl is still fast enough to counter them and use something that's not by the textbook to win, with a message that in real combat, there are no rules. Beryl continues to be dragged out of his humble life and is now getting involved with some pretty important people for jobs now. |

You need to wear something more presentable for the royalty, says the girl whose outfit shows her underwear and barely covers her chest. So he knows what's up huh? Well then I hope they have him tell her soon so this doesn't become a dragged out storyline, though didn't his own parents tell him to go after a young former student? Who else would be young enough to give them a grandchild? |

Ugh, as if relationships with age gaps like that wouldn't be totally normal in this kind of setting. That was one of the things I appreciated about that Slow Life isekai show. These aren't 21st century women still trying to 'find themselves.' Allucia has already established her own career and knows what she wants and who she wants it with. The whole, 'I'll tell him if I beat him' thing is just so dumb. May as well just wait until he's old and feeble and can't swing a sword anymore. |

Episode 9 While Mewi is fine with the schoolbag she has, Beryl insists she needs a proper one. Given how the one that's perfect for her costs so much that he takes on a job with Surena to capture a horse that's so smart and elusive. But in the end, he ends up befriending it after they both fall down the cliff and are hanging on to dear life at the river. And with that, Mewi has her school bag, one that should last her through graduation and beyond. Next time, Beryl meets up with another old acquaintance in Rose. |

Yeah how are they managing to get ahead of a horse? If they'd shown the forest as being really dense where the horse had a hard time getting around then maybe. But all they showed was it running in a straight line and then somehow he was in front of it. |

Episode 10 Beryl got his new clothes and wears them on the way back home seeing that he's not used to wearing such a dressy outfit. And then the day comes when he meets the princess. He senses something, and a bunch of assassins attack with clouds of dust, poisoned daggers, and an attack pattern that's tricky to deal with. They managed to defeat them, but their faces somehow look familiar. But before they can get anything out of them, they kill themselves as they came prepared to kill themselves with poison if they were ever captured by the enemy. Beryl has got quite a big fight on his hands and the stakes are high as failure means the princess dies. |

That attack had to be some kind of diversion. Otherwise it was a stupid plan. Why would you attack when they already reached the manor instead of the carriage earlier? Then they could have actually snuck up in the crowd instead of having to run 50m across an open plaza. Just for a change of pace I want to see one of his old male students show up and be madly in love with him. |
