Hi guys, it's my first post in this forum :)

I'm looking for an anime or manga with the main character being so twisted and emotionally warped that he's forgotten how to be his real self. A believable backstory (preferably something traumatic/tragic in childhood or later) and character development would be nice.

Recently I read Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai and I found the main character very interesting. He was regularly raped by his step-father as a child and as a result he developed extreme masochism in his later life, unable to form relationships. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm looking for yaoi, any genre is fine as long as it has a tormented MC.

I've also read Berserk. Guts sure is messed up as hell :3

Thanks, but I've already read it.
Then try watching Grisaia series (almost every char has a tragic past) Other than being a harem it's a really good series to watch.

Can I start from Grisaia no Meikyuu? It's prequel doesn't have good reviews.

Kaijutsu contains arcs of girl's messed up past. I would recommend you to watch this because it contains arcs of each girl in the group, and just to say they all have a F***ed up past tbh, especially amane. At start, it will be slow but it gets interesting later.
Meikyuu focuses on the MC's past.(If I remember correctly)

You would be missing most of the tragic backstories he mentioned and psychological elements that you want to watch. It starts of as school comedy at first but gets messed up later. Second season is more action-packed which shows how the story is concluded and you wouldn't find it any emotional if you didn't watch the first season since you'd be missing Amane's backstory. I don't know why it'd have bad reviews, it was pretty good in my opinion.

Zetman - MC goes through a chain of tragic events as a child, giving him trouble getting close to people later on. The second MC is also pretty fucked up, having some severe esteem issues. Same, go with the manga.

Other haphazard recs :
Shin Angyo Onshi
Battle Royale

Concerning Grisaia, the problem is they tried to pack 50+ hours of content from the VN into a 13-episode anime. The result is quite a mess.

I guess I'll start Grisaria from the beginning then :)

Thanks, Pandora Hearts is one of my most favourites. Zetman looks very promising. Shin Ango Onshi has been on my radar for a long time, if it's fits this criteria then it's time to finally pick this up ^_^

I don't remember how twisted the MC gets during the series, but there are many other super twisted characters in it: Mirai Nikki.

Um, yanderes are really not my thing. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Koroshiya 1. Ichi (mc) is a definition of "emotionally damaged". Tragic backstory, even more tragic present. Not sure if you're into this kind of story though.

Zetsuen no Tempest, main characters are very much affected by what happened in their past.

You can try Charlotte, not many episodes and the "emotionally wrecking" happens near the end.
