just as the topic asks, why are you learning Japanese?

for instance, I am learning Japanese because I want to be able to watch anime in Japanese without needing english subtitles. I also plan to either visit Japan for an extended period or just move there. whichever happens.

I plan on going there after high school, if everything works out I want to spend there a year.
Also I meet a lot of people who are Japanese, but can't speak any other language properly.

My dad used to live in Japan, and he's been teaching me since I was very little. I want to improve my Nihongo more.

I have many reasons:

1: Japanese is a beautiful language to listen to
2: I love listening to Japanese music and I would like to be able to understand the lyrics
3: I want to be able to watch animes without the subtitles
4: I plan to go to japan within the next few years and I would be nice to know what the signs say and what people are saying

Don't mind what others say, you weren't born to live up to their expectations.

^ Yup, almost the same reasons as yours, in my case. My love for anime and the language, however, also makes me want to aim for a somewhat difficult goal: to become a seiyuu in Japan. Call it impossible or very unlikely, but that's my main reason why I want to learn more about the Japanese language.

LOL

What about a deep-voiced, non-Japanese man proficient in speaking Japanese? XD

Inertia.

At first, I just wanted to give it a try and see if I could watch without subtitles.

Now, I have made such progress as to stand on it's own and I believe I would continue to study even without the motivation of anime.
