i'd be interested in trying an application that's free o: i know $1 isn't much for the other app but my circumstances don't really allow me to purchase anything for quite awhile :/ plus, i've been thinking for a long time how great it would be to have a free mal app. lol, i even considered trying to make one too but alas, i obviously haven't gotten that far.

Thank you for your replies. :)

This is interesting. For the moment, it should support iOS 3.2 and above. I only have an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1.1 so i cannot test other versions. (it works on the iOS 4.3 simulator though).
Also, I have no idea how it will behave with iOS 6 or iPhone 5. (i'm not using the iOS6 SDK to ensure compatibility with < 4.3 iOS versions, but it should just work fine).
I'm not planning on making the app compatible with the new iPhone 5 screen.

So the app should be compatible with all iPhones (including 1st gen and 3G), iPads (in iPhone compatibility only, i'm not making a specific UI for iPad) and iPods with iOS version equal or greater than 3.2

--

I have a few more things to do before I can release it on the App Store:
- Finish the delete feature
- Test extensively (the last thing I want to do is to fuck up someone's list)
- Find a name ^^ (suggestions are welcome)

ahh, this would actually be another reason. mine's jailbroken too on ios 4.2. i didn't jailbreak it myself and i haven't updated it yet because i'm afraid of messing it up lol.

i'll keep watching this thread for any updates on this app.

as for names, maybe iMAL? nothing else comes to mind at the moment but i'll come back if i think of anything else ^^

Exactly what I was thinking of :p
I guess I'm not really good at finding names.

I added the delete feature, now I'm working on some kind of log that would allow you to rollback your changes (in case you accidentally delete the wrong anime or something).

I'm gonna update the first post with a list of feature i'm planning to add.
Feel free to request a feature or to tell me which one you want to have first.

Originally, I made this app for my personnal use. As I don't use myanimelist.net for its manga list, I had no reason to make a manga list app.
Manga list seems quite similar to Anime list though, so I'll see if I can easily support both, but this is not my priority at the moment.

Well, I'll look into it this night and may add the manga support if I don't have to rework the whole app.

I don't know when i'm gonna post the application yet. Also, I would prefer to test the behavior of the app on non-retina iPhones (3G or 3GS) before releasing it. Is anyone interested in beta-testing the app? If so, please pm me.

if you're looking for people to beta test who do have retina display (mine's an iphone 4), i'd be interested. was gonna shoot you a pm but i wasn't sure if you're only looking for non retina displays.

Hi everyone,

Amorii and seany94 sent me their first feedbacks and the app works perfectly on their phones (iPhone 4 iOS 4.2 and iPhone 3GS iOS 4.0). This means it is ready for the App Store!
Thank you very much for helping me test the app.

Meanwhile, I added the support of the landscape orientation as suggested by Amorii.

I'll try to work on the 'add to list' feature this week-end. Do you want me to release the app on the App Store right away or should I finish the 'add to list' feature first?

i'm loving this application so far! i think it would be best to wait until you've finished the "add to list" feature first before releasing it to the app store. i think it's probably one of the more important features of having a list ^^ thank you for all your hardwork on this! i think a lot of people will really enjoy and appreciate the app as well!

I don't think I need more tester for the moment, but if you have a device that is not an iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4S I'd still be interested. (an iPhone 5 would be great, a device with iOS 6 too)
If you want to test the app before it's released on the App Store anyway, just send me a pm.

Yes it will. Everything above iOS 3.2 is compatible.

Well, I think it depends on what you've done before. If you don't know programming at all, it will be hard and take some time. If you're familiar with programming, it won't be really difficult (basically, you just get data from a server and display it). Anyways, it takes time to make iOS apps and even more when you try to handle a lot of different iOS version. Are you planning to make something specific?

Hi guys.

A few month ago, I searched here for an iOS application in order to be able to quickly update my list with my iPhone (using the website is a real pain in the ass).
I found nothing so I decided to make my own app.
At the beginning, I made it for my own purpose but now i'm thinking about sharing it to other MAL users.

The thing is, someone went faster than me and already released an iOS application that looks pretty cool. (I'm talking about Sugoi).
So I just wanted to know if anyone was interested in a free but not yet finished iOS application. For the moment, it only supports browsing your list and editing existing entries (adding and removing an anime is not possible yet). I'm planning on adding these features, obviously.

Here are some screenshots :

It is not yet released on the App Store.
To be clear, if you want a complete good-looking iOS application right now and you don't mind giving ~$1 for it, you should go for Sugoi.
If you can't or don't want to pay for an application and are ready to wait a bit for all the awesome features i'm planning to add, please tell me ;)

-----------------------------------------------------------
Supported features:
- Browse your list
- Edit status/episodes/score/start date/finish date
- Delete an anime

Planned features (let me know if there is anything you want me to add):
- Search and view anime page
- Add anime to your list
- Log and rollback changes made to your list
- Quick actions to update your list as fast as possible
- Offline mode (list stored localy)
- More settings (for exemple, disabling thumbnails for slow connections)
- Some kind of favourite page where you can really quickly update animes

- A better looking UI (since i'm not good at it, I only used the default buttons and fields provided by the iOS SDK at the moment)
- Manga list support (when everything else is done)

Any comment or suggestion is highly appreciated.

What language did you write this in? I know iOS apps can be made in Objective-C, C#, and C++. =O

Add to list -> Done.
Here are some screenshots:

As you can see, there are 4 actions you can perform:
- "See on MyAnimeList.net" will open your browser on the anime page.
- "Plan to watch" will add the anime to your list with the status "Plan to watch"
- "Watching" will add the anime to your list with the status "Watching", 0 episode watched and the start date set to the current date.
- "Add..." will show the 5 fields to let you add the anime the way you want.

I'm not really happy with the anime information screen, I don't really like how it looks. Unfortunately I'm pretty bad at finding a good design so this is the only thing I could come up with.
What do you think? If you have ideas on how I could make it look better, feel free to tell me.

What exactly don't you like about how it looks? Just trying to get a feel for what you mean or how you might want to change it up.. Color? Background? The way the information is arranged? Personally, I like that it has a really clean feel to it, the information is presented very straightforward but some design tweaks could make it even better. What I really hate are some apps that are overly designed (does that make sense?) and take forever to load/change screens/etc.

I don't know, it is just a general feeling. I find it a bit messy.
On the second screen, where you can't see the Synopsis, there are just too many informations and almost the whole screen in covered in text. I think the english title and synonyms are just too much here. I want to keep them though, as they are pretty important.

But maybe it's just me.
My goal is not to make an overly designed app at all, I want it to be simple, fast and easy to use. I'm just trying not to make something ugly at the same time.

I don't have any iDevices, but as a fellow developer (albeit an Android one) I just wanted to chime in on UI design. I can't say specifically what you should do, but a great place to start is look to popular apps for design patterns and adapt then for your own use. To kind of demonstrate, I took some screenshots from the Android Google+ and YouTube apps, which were the basis of the card UI I came up with.

+ =

..did that make any sense? Find design patterns you like and try to mimic them in a unique and pretty way. :)

That's a good point. At the beginning, I wanted to use only what's provided by the official SDK to make the app look like a standard iOS app. The problem is, although the UI is pretty simple to use and responsive, it's not looking so good.

I mean, I think the app is pretty ergonomic right now, but in the end I'm not fond of the default iOS look. That said, I think i'm gonna stick to this for the moment. There is just that one screen I don't like, and I already looked at other apps but didn't figure out how to make it look better.

I'm gonna download some apps to see if I can get ideas though.

And also, I really love Atarashii! list layout, good job with this ;)

Hey!

I've been busy the past few days, so I didn't really update the app much.
However I've made a little change on the anime details screen:

Also, the english title and the synonyms are no longer shown by default, but you can still enable them if you find them useful.

I'm still waiting for some feedbacks from seany94 and Amorii and I have a few things to add, so I'm not gonna release on the store right now.

Also, I was wondering about how to add the Manga list support. Would you prefer to have a "Switch to manga" button on the "My list" screen, or should I separate the current "My list" tab into two tabs (one for anime, one for manga)? Or any other idea?

hi! just sent you a pm as well but i wanted to respond to your manga list question. i think having a "switch to manga" button would be fine. i do see how splitting the tabs at the bottom would work too but it could make the bottom row too messy? i know it would only be a fourth button but perhaps it'd be a good idea to save room if you do have plans to expand the app further down the line. also, if you're going to implement the manga list (love it!), will you also be adding a search function for manga? maybe instead of having a "switch to manga" button on the list page, you could have a notification pop up after hitting the "my list" button asking if you want anime or manga. and if you do implement a manga search function, maybe this same notification could be used when hitting the "search" button.

ps. love your avatar. one of the best emails i've ever read xD

Yes, everything that can be done with animes will be available for mangas aswell.

Hum, I'm not sure about this. Or maybe for the first time only.
The thing is, it will be annoying to get a popup everytime you hit the "My list" button. Also, some people, including me, use only one list (I only use the anime list).
I think a button would be fine. Also, I'll try to make a visual change on the screens so you know easily if you're dealing with mangas or animes.

ahh, that's true, it could get annoying constantly having that pop up so maybe having the "switch to" button on the list pages would be best after all. i like the idea for a visual change for the anime vs manga screen. maybe the background color could change differentiating the two?

I'm gonna be busy for the next few days because of my exams (yeah, I'm still a student~), so I won't update the app for a while. That's why I decided to post it on the App Store, so you can test it right away.

I'm gonna make a full rework of the first post with new screenshots and informations about it.

Alright, the app seems not to work on iOS 6, which is pretty bad thing, since I don't have an iOS 6 device to test it.

I'm gonna try to find one and fix the bugs, but it will obviously delay the app's release on the store a bit. Sorry for this.

Edit: Fixed the bug, and resubmitted the app to the store. Wait&see.

I don't have an iPad, nor an iPhone 5, that's why I'm not planning on making specific UI for these devices right now. I know it would be cool, but I can't really make an UI without testing it on an actual device. Maybe one day I'll buy an iPad, but this is very unlikely. Sorry.
(I'm probably gonna end up releasing the source code anyway, so maybe someone will do it for you :) )

Nope. iPhone and Android are very different and I can't just "support Android", I would need to make a whole new application. You should take a look at Atarashii! and MALicious, which are Android apps for MyAnimeList. (With my old Android, I used MALO and it worked just fine)

Thanks everyone for your comments :)
