"Monster" Question

In the Anime seris Monster, I've currently watched 3 episodes and I'm about to watch the 4th as I get done posting this. I had a question, I was watching episode 3 and towards the middle Detective Runge(I think that's his name) the one always typing with his fingers he showed up at the hospital and said "It's been nine years since I've seen you" So did the show advance 9 years? I may have missed it, but I swore I watched every detail.
