I personally didn´t believe there was any romantic relationship implied between shinji and asuka in the tv series or the last movies, but i would definetly like it to happen in the rebuilt of evangelion. What do you guys think??

No romantic relationship. I thought that Asuka did, the time she kissed Shinji ^^;
Then again, both Shinji and Asuka have... sort of a opposite relation for being
alone, wanting to be with people etc.

I think that in these movies, they're keeping it like the TV series for sure.

They easily are a couple its just that they crutch each other, if one is going strong the other is feeling weak, they are rivals even shingi ...gets off...to her in the hospital, he does have feelings for her thats why he chose her as his eve in "The end of Evangelion" he choses her to be the only one left on earth with him.

That is not what happened at the end of Evangelion. I knew an Asuka thread would start up somewhere fast but thought it would at least wait till she had some screen time. Shinji and Asuka having a romance? That's just plain wrong! NGE really is not suited for a romance, as much of a Rei fan that I have been for over ten years.. its just not a good element for NGE.
Kind regards

I wouldn't mind a more fleshed out relationship. I think the two of them were both very interesting representations of modern youth and It would be sort of fitting that they had a more defined relationship. I think it would've been interesting watching their relationship unfold and how it would ultimately influence both their lives.

I thought more could've been done in regards to romantic (or just human) relationships between Rei, Shinji, and Asuka but we never fully saw it play out. Rei well... was Rei. Asuka self imploded and Shinji was left all by his lonely self before anything developed. Branching out further to other human relations... their friends and school were also seperated from them very quickly.

It was obvious that Shinji and Asuka were both flawed youths that needed but didn't have that someone to depend on. Both tried to fill that void in different ways. Asuka did it with her confidence and her belief in her superiority. Shinji did it with his pursuit of praise. They were 14 and very weak, immature, and broken people.

It would've been nice to seem the story deal more with interactions rather than just the realm of introverted isolation. But I guess that's what made NGE the anime that it was... a very cold and twisted view on youth and human relations.

I don't think there is much romance between them at all, If anything I think he just wants to fuck her and that's about it

It doesn't think, it doesn't feel, it doesn't laugh or cry..... All it does from dusk till dawn is make the soldiers die.

Yeh, I mean some people say she's just a sexual presence in his life nothing more, he doesn't romantically love her.

I disagree

If he didn't love her why would Rei take her form for him during 3rd Impact

There actually was a relationship between the two in the tv, but was more implied and somewhat revealed/supported in episode 22 director's cut. http://wiki.evageeks.org/Theory_and_Analysis:Shinji_and_Asuka%27s_Relationship

woooww... this is a verrrry old thread
but i decided to share my two-cents anyways haha

note** please don't take any offense of what i say,
this is simply my personal opinion on what i've perceived from watching the series/movies

i really, really don't think they should be actually romantic at all...
plus, if it became too romantic, it might ruin the ambiguity that NGE is famous for..
(and personally, i cannot stand asuka's haughtiness and her ego trips. -_-;)

if anything, i think shinji is better off being with kaworu. {:
but that's just my wishful thinking
and perhaps kaworu just cares for shinji like rei does...
in like a brotherly/parent sort of way..?

anyways, i believe that there's always been some sort of chemistry
between shinji and "the redheaded she-devil incarnate"
but due to shinji's insecurities and asuka's inability to show her true feelings
and instead, she acts all tough and she's often teasing shinji,
it just tends to leave the two's relationship really inconclusive
because there's this certain distance between them.

yet, i think they still tend to hold onto something there
possibly due to the insatiable craving for someone to care for them
because they're lonely and can't care for themselves.

because of shinji's obvious self-hatred
and how he cowardly pushes others away to feel safe from rejection,
it's hard for him to truly reach out and genuinely like someone else.
plus, i think with shinji's hyper-sensitivity, i think he's better off
with someone who could actually be understanding and patient
with his whiny ass and can actually help him open up (like kaworu)
instead of someone who's constantly reinforcing his feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem (like asuka).

also, in the end of evangelion, in the flashbacks,
asuka actually mentions things like being broken up..
even at the very end of the movie, she calls shinji pathetic.

it really does just seem more of a desperate facade and being more physical than actual 'true love'.
i think they're too young and too unstable to truly feel anything for each other anyways.
(they're just not an emotionally healthy couple...)

unfortunately, shinji chose her to be his eve
because i guess she's the only girl he's was ever really closest with
even if it wasn't on a real romantic level..

now, i could be wrong but this is the gist of what i got:
i just think they're simply not meant to be together.
however, in the end, they're stuck with each other..
i guess misery likes company, right?? >.<
