Ethical reflection has long been rooted in the concrete conditions of human life, namely its vulnerability, temporality, and finitude. Our moral concepts of responsibility, purpose, value, and fulfillment are shaped by the fact that human existence is limited and irretrievable, unfolding under the pressure of scarcity and mortality. From ancient Mesopotamian myths to the philosophical tradition of existentialism, these limits have been treated not as incidental, but as constitutive of the very meaning of ethics itself. Yet the hypothetical possibility of immortality calls these assumptions into question. If humans discovered a way to live forever, would it make people afraid to truly live?

Not sure why they'd be afraid, but they'd be much more procrastinating, because if they could live forever then there'd be almost no reason to hurry.
That'd probably lead to a much slower progress of humankind, perhaps even an idle state of sorts, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, because both slow and fast progression have different upsides and downsides.

I question your premise that moral concepts are solely rooted in human existence being limited. Whilst this is certainly true for some morals I don't think it applies to all. Morality is often rooted in what is beneficial to society and maintaining social cohesion. Anything that is detrimental to this such as stealing, lying etc. are discouraged whilst conformity and respecting elders is encouraged as it allows society to function in a way that the powers that be want. Indeed certain immoral actions are encouraged if it is deemed necessary to maintain the current social paradigm. In short, morality is surprisingly fluid given the social environment one lives in.

If people were immortal then I would imagine there would be much greater strive as the oldest generations would maintain their power whilst anyone younger would struggle to break through this barrier. There would be no passing of the torch. In terms of family building much would depend if people could remain fertile indefinitely or are still constrained by our current fertility window. If the latter is true then I can see there being a lot of grief if women were only fertile for the first 40 years of their life. If on the other hand the former applies then families would be way larger and span huge time spans. This could create some interesting dynamics as you could have grandchildren older than their uncles/aunts.

In terms of "truly living" difficult to answer this question but assuming this to mean a better or more exciting life that is hard to answer. For the daredevils and risk takers an immortal life would surely be less thrilling as there is no danger. I would even go so far to say that for most people, give enough time, they would find immortality a bit of a curse. However in terms of total enjoyable and good times; there would be more as there is more time to build/create good times. Thing is I imagine life would be slower since mortality isn't a thing so people are less in a rush to get things done. As a result any good/major events would be spread over a longer time frame. However if people lived longed enough I can see them getting fed up of life.

Incredible profile bro, mad respect.
Real answer: the universe is ~13.8 billion years old, that is incredibly young for a universe. If people were told what happens after death, they would be in terror because planning for that many trillions+ years will destroy people who don't want to comprehend living with themselves for that long.

@SushiRoe Smh, I deliberately put it there to emphasize that it's closer to entertainment than philosophical discussion.

That's true, but, it applies in almost all cases.

Moral concepts arise because humans are finite beings. Limited in time, resources, power, knowledge, and fragile. Morality is a response to these constraints, not primarily to abstract goals like social cohesion.

Authority does not require society, it requires stakes. Social institutions articulate morality but moral intuitions precede formal systems.

No, my sense of purpose is not shaped by mortality, because I'll never run out of personal projects.

I want every alpha and beta version of every video game I love to either be directly released by the video game companies who have them under lock and key,
or I want fans to meticulously reconstruct them.

I want every anime and manga on my list that I scored 7/10 or better to be watched/read by at least 500,000 MAL users.

I also want every person I personally interact with on MAL to have the level of knowledge that I possess about Astrology (Whole Sign Houses system) and about Socionics types.
And I want them to perfectly understand my reasoning for determining that specific female characters are ESTp.

I can go on and on. My personal projects will never be finite.
Even if these goals were miraculously accomplished, I have even more goals than that.
I want every country in the world to be 100% accepting of the things in entertainment that Japan is cool with.
Etc.
