I wouldn't say the anime ruined it. The story was still mostly the same and alot of aspects other then the animation such as the voice acting were still great. But there is no reason I would ever recommend watching this show over just reading the manga. Uzumaki also isn't even the best Junji Ito manga I'd recommend someone read, it's really good but personally it wouldn't even be in my top 3 Junji Ito stories.

The adaptation was very poor, unfortunately. It’s true that fans were having too high expectations for this serialisation, but let’s be honest: This could have been a lot better, but the budget was not too high.

I don’t think it’s ever that deep. The fact that it even got an adaptation speaks volumes to how good this piece of fiction is. Yeah it did kind of get ruined, but It won’t ruin its legacy at all.

Any adaptation, regardless of its quality, can help expand the fanbase, as some people will want to explore the original source. The more popular the original source, the greater the likelihood that it will be adapted again with a quality that does it justice. The first episode at least demonstrated that with the right approach, it's possible to convey the oppressive atmosphere of the manga in the anime.

It honestly isn't a good adaptation, the pacing issue is worse than the bad animation. I wouldn't recommend anyone watching it instead of reading the manga.
The manga isn't a masterpiece anyway, I still want good adaptations of Hellstar Remina and Gyo, they are my favorite stories from Junji Ito

Tomie is by far my favorite. Second is probably Remina. Third is kind of a toss up and could be quite a few different ones, Uzumaki might even still squeak in there honestly. Black Paradox and The Liminal Zone are some good recommendations aswell. Most of his works are anthology short stories rather then long form stories like Uzumaki so it's kind of hard to compare all of them.

I got into Uzumaki recently but besides the animation quality I don't think the narrative in the anime is very good compared to the manga. Idk why they decided to tell the story out of order if they weren't going to write around that. Also splitting chapters up across multiple episodes is so strange to me, why did they stretch out The Spiral Obsession Part 2 across episodes 1-3? The anime isn't terrible but there's lots of decisions they made with it that made me not enjoy it.

The first episode was really promising, but the quality dropped afterward. I did enjoy the black-and-white style, as it felt like the manga was coming to life.
Besides the visuals and somewhat clunky animation, I think they could have done more with the music to bring out the novel's mysterious and dark tones. Overall, it just feels a bit goofy with a hint of spookiness.

I haven't watched the anime, but I've seen people complaining about the pacing, omitted storylines and minor but symbolic details missing, and it worries me, because the manga has phenomenal plot and symbolism (for a horror story).

I'm not really into horror genre. But that one time I was bored and read every single horror manga my horror fanatic friend brought to the dorm, only two horror stories stuck with me to this day. Uzumaki is one of two. It was that good. From what I heard, the anime is a "tl,dr" of the manga, it's quite disappointing to hear, ngl

junji ito is a prime example of anime not actually mattering when it comes to legacy. yes its sad that theirs never been a GOOD adaptation (gyo was the closest to actually being decent throughout) but ive never heard anyone say "ugh junji ito is so bad" its usually "its so sad that the anime sucks but the manga is great"

i don’t think the anime ruined it, but the production and execution could’ve have been A LOT better

5 years for 4 episodes is still insane to me and i feel there was a lot of things from the manga that they didn’t include in the anime

but with all that out the way, i did enjoy watching the anime as a whole

In no way did the adaptation ruin Ito’s story. I just don’t think it necessarily did it justice. To me the ability to tell a story is different depending on the medium and Ito uses the turning of pages to establish timing, which is what the anime struggled with in my opinion. Like when Shuichi’s father dies, the scene build up to moment your about to turn the page, and then reveals and full two-page spread of his fathers spiraled body. I remember that moment really gripping me the first time I read it. If the anime had taken a little more time to build that suspense I think it would have made it a lot better and match the pacing and tone to be more akin to the source material. It carried the plot faithfully though and I have no major gripes with it. Of course Adult Swim could have been wayyyy more responsible and transparent with audiences about outsourcing the development of episode two.
